2ATEX Summary
In a global society the need to adhere to
multiple compliance standards is growing.
Nematron has traditionally supplied UL Class I
Division 2 hazardous location approvals for most
of our Industrial Monitors and PCs. However the
same customers that were content with this
certification are now selling to Europe and other
parts of the world. These other areas of the
world demand a different set of certifications.
Therefore we are proud to announce the
availability of ATEX Zone 2 and 22 approved
Industrial Monitors and PCs. Several changes and
extensive testing were required to obtain this
certification. These new offerings will allow you
to offer a more global product portfolio, while
proudly being made in the USA!

10ATEX Markings for iPC-Series and M-Series
- The following markings must appear on the -ATEX
variations of the iPC-Series and M-Series units
in order to be ATEX Zone 2/22 approved - These markings can only be applied at time of
production - Will appear on the product ID label
- A one page explanation of what all these symbols
mean is available by clicking this link - Nematron ATEX Markings Explained

74x.pdf - User Manual for each product also has this
information documented - Units with front panels are not intended for high
impact installations (does not apply to nPC300) - ATEX requires 2 levels of testing
- 0.2 or 0.4 meter drop of a spherical weight onto
the front surface after heat aging - Nematron units 100 pass the lower 0.2 meter drop
test but do not meet the 0.4 meter drop test - The 0.2 meter drop is a harder test to pass than
the UL Class I Division 2 test that our units
currently meet - Transient protection shall be provided that is
set at a level not exceeding 140 of the peak
rated voltage at the supply terminals to the unit - Because these are Open construction units (have
vents and are not IP54 sealed) they need to be
installed within ATEX approved enclosures - Enclosure must utilize a tool removable cover,
door, or panel - Inside enclosure must maintain a Pollution Degree
2 environment per IEC/EN60664-1 - Normally, only non conductive pollution occurs.
Occasionally however a temporary conductivity
caused by condensation may be expected - No dust, no conductive vapors, gases, or fumes,
and condensation must be controlled and kept to
minimum level
13Zone 2 Specific Conditions for Safe Use
- Zone 2 (Group IIC) is for installations where
gases, vapors, and mist may be present - Group IIC also includes group IIA and IIB
- IIA, IIB, and IIC define the types of gases
- In any environment that is NOT Pollution degree
2, the unit must be mounted in an ATEX approved
IP64 or better enclosure per IEC/EN 60079-15
(also applies to nPC300) - Examples are outdoor, hose down areas, or areas
where fumes are present - Must maintain a Pollution Degree 2 environment
per IEC/EN60664-1 inside the enclosure - Enclosure must utilize a tool removable cover,
door, or panel - Transient protection shall be provided that is
set at a level not exceeding 140 of the peak
rated voltage at the supply terminals to the unit - In any environment that is already Pollution
degree 2, the unit must be mounted in an ATEX
approved IP54 or better enclosure per IEC/EN
60079-15 (also applies to nPC300) - Examples may be indoor areas, clean rooms, or
areas with tightly controlled environments - Must maintain a Pollution Degree 2 environment
per IEC/EN60664-1 inside the enclosure - Enclosure must utilize a tool removable cover,
door, or panel - Transient protection shall be provided that is
set at a level not exceeding 140 of the peak
rated voltage at the supply terminals to the unit
14Zone 22 Specific Conditions for Safe Use
- Zone 2 (Group IIIC) is for installations where
conductive dust may be present - Group IIIC also includes group IIIA (conductive
flyings) and IIIB (non-conductive dust) - For any IIIC installation (includes IIIA and
IIIB) the touchscreen on any iPC-Series or
M-Series must be wiped down with a damp cloth
prior to use - To prevent any electrostatic discharges from
causing ignition of combustible materials. - For any IIIC installation (includes IIIA and
IIIB) the brightness adjustment buttons on the
M1500SRT must be wiped with a damp cloth prior to
use - To prevent any electrostatic discharges from
causing ignition of combustible materials. - Any environment that is considered IIIC requires
the use of an IP64 or better enclosure per IEC/EN
60079-15 (also applies to nPC300 ) - Examples are outdoor, hose down areas, or areas
where fumes are present - Any environment that is considered IIIA or IIIB
requires the use of an IP54 or better enclosure
per IEC/EN 60079-15 (also applies to nPC300 ) - Examples may be indoor areas, clean rooms, or
areas with tightly controlled environments - The nPC300 is not an ATEX Zone 22 approved
unit, however it can be contained inside an
enclosure for use in Zone 22 installations

18ATEX Competitive Comparisons
- What Competitors?
- There are very few Open construction units that
have ATEX Zone 2/22 approvals - Open construction means there are vents and
openings, but enough to make the unit operator
safe. The use of an enclosure is required to
protect from dust, gas, vapors, and fumes - Allows for customization of the enclosure and
inclusion of other devices - Open construction allows for a more cost
competitive offering - Closest Competition is PepperalFuchs 22 Monitor
- Only approved for indoor Zone 2 locations
(Pollution Degree 2 environments only) - Also Open Construction that needs to be in an
enclosure - More expensive than the Nematron M2200WT-DC-ATEX
- Competitors may state ATEX Zone 2 or 22 approved,
but unless they have a certificate from a
certified ATEX approved test lab it is highly
suspicious and questionable - ATEX can be a self declaration but many
installations demand official documentation - Ask for proof of compliance
- Use our official DEMKO certificate as leverage to
your customer(s)
19Product Training Demos
- Specific product training is not currently
scheduled - Contact your Nematron Regional Sales Manager or
sales_at_nematron.com if you are interested in
setting up a training session or webinar, we will
be glad to assist - ATEX Demo Unit Availability
- ATEX marked units are available for purchase as
demos, since these are higher priced units with
special compliance, markings, and materials a 50
discount will be offered for a limited time - Only one per distributor organization
- Discount only available through the end of 2015
- Note these are 24 VDC powered only, making it
more difficult to demo. AC power supplies for
these units are not offered. - Our standard units can be utilized to demo the
product form, fit, and performance will be
identical - There is a very limited number of ATEX demo units
available, contact your Nematron Regional Sales
Manager or sales_at_nematron.com for more details if
one is absolutely required
