The Organizations
  • Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)
    believed that the U.S. had been taken over by
    large corporations that controlled the
    government. They called for greater political
    freedom and questioned
  • -dress codes
  • -curfews
  • -mandatory ROTC programs
  • -dormitory regulations

The Movement Emerges
  • Many colleges held teach-ins. Basically
    students would occupy various administration
    buildings and other campus facilities and lecture
    against the war.
  • The SDS others organized marches
  • -April 1965 20,000 people in D.C.
  • -November 1965 30,000 people in D.C.
  • -Spring 1967 500,000 people in NYC
  • -October 1967 30,000 in D.C.
  • The views of the students were reflected in the
    music of the era.

Irony
  • At age 18 a male could be drafted into military
    service to protect freedom, yet he wasnt allowed
    to vote until 21.
  • In February 1965, the Johnson eliminated student
    deferments.
  • -prior to 1965, if you were enrolled in college
    you were granted a deferment
  • -after 1965, you not only had to be enrolled in
    college, but you had to be in good academic
    standing (like athletic eligibility)

  • The U.S. was divided into two camps
  • The doves opposed the war in Vietnam and
    thought we should leave
  • The hawks believed that we should kick commie
    butt in Vietnam.
