4Status in the field of HSCT and haematology in
the beginning of cooperation between twin-towns
St-Petersburg and Hamburg. (1989-1990, first
visits of Professor Axel Zander)
- There were few special clinics in ex-USSR, which
would be in accordance with international
standards for BMT performing, especially
allogeneic BMT. - The therapy results of children and adults with
leukemia and other haematological diseases were
significantly worse as compare to the same
results in the West. For example the surviving
in children with ALL in ex-USSR varied among
10-20, in the West 50-70. - There were no labs in accordance with
international standard for HLA-typing,
cryobiology, molecular biology, etc. - Ministry of Public Health of ex-USSR didnt
finance BMT-programme completely. - Actually, there were few in ex-USSR specialists,
who is familiar to technologies of BMT and
modern chemotherapy. - The international cooperation in ex-USSR in the
field of BMT and Haematology was minimal but
interest for BMT was extremely high after
Chernobyl accident - Levels of living of population, including medical
professionals, during the first years of
Perestroika was extremely low.
