Project goals
  • To compile research on Puget Sound earthquake
    activity
  • To research how well prepared UPS is for
earthquakes by investigating current campus plans
  • To propose actual improvements and organize
events to help educate the campus and the
    surrounding community

on campus, with guidance from PCDEMs Richard
    Shroedell

suggestions to the advisory board, and in so
doing make the UPS community more prepared for an
    Earthquake.
  • Meeting scheduled for November 7th

Follow Up
  • Faculty Response
  • Feedback overall very positive
  • Immediate implementation into departmental
    earthquake plans
  • Some afterthoughts..
  • Activity useful because we were able to meet
    higher administrative officials

7
Non-Structural Retrofitting
  • Securing and relocating objects in a room so that
they do not cause injury in an earthquake.

8
Non-Structural Retrofitting
  • Danger
  • Fluorescent lights
  • Computers
  • Cabinets
  • Projection screens
  • Clocks and other hanging items
  • Other objects sliding and falling
  • Solution
  • Light sleeves
  • Earthquake straps (heavy-duty Velcro straps)
  • Bolt and bracket to wall or earthquake straps
  • Crimp hooks so that screens wont fall or hook to
    wall
  • Screw into stud and use adhesive (quake putty or
    ties)
  • Use non-slip material (quake matting) or adhesive
so that objects dont slide, and/or move to a
    less hazardous (i.e. lower) location

Conclusions
  • Created an emergency plan for the Geology

    Hickey and Mike Valentine
  • Created a prototype map combining evacuation
routes and gathering places for Thompson Hall
  • Researched C.E.R.T. training opportunities
  • We learned how to non-structurally retrofit a
home, office or classroom compiled a price
list with estimates of the cost to retrofit a
    classroom like Thompson 153
  • Retrofit plan was declined by Geology Deptartment
head as it was too expensive
  • We created informational pamphlets and posters
for use by residence life for educational
    purposes
  • We organized an Earthquake Preparedness Forum
that was held November 17, 2005 which was open to
    the community
