• A transition has occurred with library catalogs
• ledgers
• card catalogs
• online records in OPACs

• Sources of information for book selection have
  also progressed steadily since the early 1970s
• national bibliographies from the Reference Dept
• notification slips from YBP/LH
• electronic records in GOBI 2

• Selectors can now be full participantsin this
  online system.
• GOBI 2 integrates the entire process of book
  selection, acquisition, and cataloging
• Selection information is found on-line
• Orders are submitted quickly and efficiently
• GOBI 2 provides electronic catalog records for
  our OPAC

Staying Online

• Shared awareness of activity among selectors
• Easy communication between selector and
  acquisition staff
• Swift communication between librarians and
  YBP/LH regarding status of orders

• For the selector, there are these advantages
• No need to wait for sorting and distribution of
  paper slips
• No stalling or loss of slips on the wrong
  selectors desk, if sent there in error
• No loss of slips for any reason
• Each selector can search slips independently
• Efficient clean-up or review of selection
  activity to find overlooked items (fell between
  selectors)
• Retrospective search on specific topics to spend
  special funds

Tip Always sort your lists by Library History,
which will cluster the titles so you can delete
or at least bypass titles which have already been
ordered.

• When you dont work online in GOBI 2
• You lose personal control
• Slips are being held in a backlog, awaiting
  manual sorting and distribution to selectors
• Slips sometimes are distributed to the wrong
  selector
• Can not create individual sort/selection
• You dont see the supplementary information
• Variant editions, by date, publisher, or paper
  vs. cloth
• Availability
• Library order status/history

Staying within the GOBI 2 online environment is
the most efficient way to work, in terms of
staff time and information provided.

Easy to administer Set up the Views by choosing
search parameters just as you do when selecting
in GOBI 2, select the frequency and format for
the GobiAlert lists and match the resulting
View with the names of appropriate faculty
(Users).

There are 3 formats for the GobiAlert lists
Interactive (Web), which brings the User into the
GOBI 2 system RTF Tab-Delimited

There is no duplication of of work for the
selector when reviewing faculty selections and
ones own selections, because of the Library
History information.

GobiAlerts for faculty

• Faculty can provide recommendations.
• GobiAlerts bring faculty into the online
  environment.
• Its a very effective way to boost liaison with
  faculty and give them the sense that they are
  taken seriously in the library process.
• Librarians get a very clear indication of each
  faculty members research needs, which adds to
  the accuracy of the librarys collection
  policies.
• Faculty receive current awareness for their own
  research activities.
• Faculty can receive other alert services this
  gives them one for new books.
