HOW to LEAD CLASSROOM DISCUSSIONS
A two-hour workshop for Grades K-5 Teachers
The goal of classroom discussion is to strengthen
student mathematical thinking and learning.
Asking Why do you think that? has profound
effects on students mathematical thinking and
their habits of mind in general. The teachers
role in the discussion process is critical,
providing the appropriate environment so students
can express, share, and broaden their learning
experiences in mathematics. Workshop participants
will consider the connections between questioning
and discussions, and classroom discussion
formats. They will examine a variety of resources
as they explore ways to incorporate these ideas
into their classroom discussions.
