  • The Republic of Estonia
  • Estonia is the northernmost and smallest
of the three Baltic countries, is the eastern
shores of the Baltic Sea in the north-east of
    Europe.
  • It is famous for a land of great natural
beauty with a long and varied history and rich
    culture.
  • Lying between East and West, it has served
as a junction of international trade routes for
    centuries.

4
  • To the east, the country borders with
Russia. Lake Peipsi, which separates Estonia and
Russia, is the 4th largest freshwater body in
Europe. Latvia is the countrys neighbour to the
south. The land borders total 600 km.

5
  • In the west, the coast of Estonia is
washed by the Baltic Sea in the north, by the
    Gulf of Finland.
  • The length of the coastline is 3,800 km.
The longest distance east to west is 350 km,
while north to south Estonia stretches 240 km.

National Emblems
7
Coat of arms
  • The lions of the coat of arms
are the most ancient of Estonia's symbols. They
have been used since the 13th century, when they
served as the big coat of arms for the capital
    city, Tallinn.
  • Tallinn got these lions from the King of
Denmark, Waldemar the Second. Various other
foreign powers came and went, but the three lions
remained to become the coat of arms for most of
    the Estonian territory.

8
National Flag
  • The Estonian blue-black-and-whit
e national flag was originally the flag of the
Estonian Students Society, located in Otepää
Church in 1884. Today there is a memorial plaque
outside the church commemorating the event. The
Flag Museum, opened in 1996, attracts tourists
who take an interest in the history of the flag.

9
Population
  • Today the Estonian population numbers about 1.4
    million.

T A L L I N N
  • Tallinn has wonderful mediaval Old Town
with the atmosphere of the 14th and 15th
centuries. Its narrow cobbled streets, medieval
buildings with various decorative elements draw
    visitors in large number.
  • Only a few towns in northen Europe have
mediaval districts as well preserved in Tallinn.

11
  • The rest of the capital could be called the
New Town, dating mainly from the 19th and 20th
    centuries

12
  • Tallinn is a mixture of the modern and
the mediaval, where traditions goes hand in hand
with the most recent trends. Its cross-cultural
history has given the city a special charm.
