Pediatrics
  • 40 response rate out of a maximum of 25
    students
  • Objectives and expectations were clearly detailed
from the start of the rotation with an initial
    orientation 5.4/7
  • The supervisors were well aware of the learning
objectives appropriate for a clerk within the
    rotation 5.9/7
  • There was an optimal amount of formal teaching
sessions to cover major topics within the
    specialty 5.6/7

2
  • There was an optimal amount of informal clinical
    teaching surrounding patient encounters 5.2
  • As a clerk, I had an appropriate level of
    independence in seeing/treating patients 5.4
  • Evaluation methods were clearly detailed 5.7
  • Evaluation methods were at an appropriate level
of difficulty for clerkship training 4.9
  • Feedback was given either formally or informally
    throughout the rotation 5.3
  • The block coordinator was available and
    responsive during the rotation 6.3
  • The rotation focused largely on education rather
    than service 5.2

3
  • The rotation has provided me a firm background in
    this field of medicine 5.4
  • The rotation consisted of an excellent variety of
    patient problems 5.4
  • The patient centred approach was modeled by the
    faculty on this rotation 6.0
  • Teachers in this rotation model exemplary
attitude towards gender and diversity issues 5.1

    educational experience. 5.8

Comments
  • A lot of patient pigeon-holing was done regarding
cultural issues.  for example... a patient whose
family had arrived from Sudan (an unknown period
of time ago) was immediately thought to be
malnourished... and the patients country of
origin was CONSTANTLY brought up on patient
    introduction

  • The necessity of a group oral exam escapes me
The residents on CTU tried their best, but
    were generally too busy/stressed/frazzled to
offer much in the way of teaching The nurses
in emerg were very very rude to the clerks
(without any reason or provacation), and were so
bossy that it almost hindered our learning
  • Really enjoyed Paeds ER experience.  Excellent
teaching in Paeds ER and variety of problems.
Roles for CTU could have been more clearly
    defined.

6
  • Excellent rotation. Good variety of patient
problems and interactions. Good hands on
experiences in ER, and CTU gave good management
skills. Some ER staff were not so friendly, but
most were. By far the best part was the
community rotation in Kitchener for me. I
learned a lot from my consultant, and got to see
a wide variety of problems. Good levels of
independence allowed on this rotation considering
    it was our first rotation.

7
  • Residents were excellent. Good coverage of
different peds problems at CTU, ER Com Peds
this combination should be encouraged. Clerkship
and resident teaching rounds great for learning.
Emerg physicians like Dr Lim and Dr Wellington
are wonderful teachers. Oral exam should be
modified to one to one testing no purpose is
served by having everyone else silently
listening. For written exam, please ask more
common problems than mediastinal teratoma and
adjust test so it is more appropriate to our
    level

8
  • I didnt find the teaching sessions all that
helpfulquite a few times the session was either
cancelled or else the doctor didnt show up.
Although some of the sessions were good, many
others were not relevant to what is really
necessary for a clerk to know (ie details for
treatment of nephritic syndrome were covered, yet
    never were UTIs/urinalysis explained).
  • Too much of our time was spent rounding on CTU.
  • Emerge was VERY good and the majority of the
    doctors were really helpful.
