2INTRUDUCTION Most of the Ayurvedic
preparations are of plant based. The uses of
metals and minerals as medicine are mentioned in
Charaksamhita (500 B.C.) but more scientific
systematic and extensive use of metals and
minerals is initiated by Nagarjuna and others
(8-12th A.D.). This metalo-mineral preparations
constitutes a separate branch of Ayurveda called
Rasashastra. These preparations are called
Rasakalpas and considered potent in action. The
dose and duration of these medicines are short.
Apart from this these are considered catalytic
(Yogavahi) and acts on molecular level (Sukshama
srotogamitva).
3Even though the Metals and Mineral preparations
are in use since centuries and proven to be
highly efficacious but in view of recent
expression about safety raised by certain
scientists from other fields is to be validated
in a scientific way. Safety and efficacy are
depends on the methodology adopted for the
preparations. Any deviation from the classical
preparation method is not considered as quality
medicine hence will not yield desired results.
