24Open Textbook Business Model
Who Pays?
Only two entities have resources to
pay Individuals or Institutions
Since our mission is to offer the books freely
to anyone, that leaves Institutions to pay for
it.
25Open Textbook Business Model
Institutional Value Proposition
Since institutions will pay for open textbooks
what is the value they are buying?
The answer is different for K-12 versus higher
education
- K-12 textbooks are purchased by state DOEs and
school districts (institutions) - Higher education textbooks are purchased by
students (individuals)
26Open Textbook Business Model
Higher Ed Current Conditions
- The unusual nature of the college textbook
market - Intense consolidation leaving five companies
controlling 80 percent of the market - Faculty order books while students purchase
book, removing price as a primary consideration - Students do not have an institutionalized way
to exert their own market power
27Open Textbook Business Model
Higher Ed Current Conditions
- . . . The overall cost of textbooks has risen at
four times the rate of inflation since 1994 - State Student PIRG project, Required Reading A
Look at the Worst Publishing Tactics at Work,
October 2006
The average student will spend 900 each year on
textbooks . . . The State PIRGs, Ripoff 101,
January 2004
. . . The cost of textbooks as a percentage of
tuition is . . . 72 for a full-time student
attending a two-year public institution. Governme

Higher Ed Value Proposition
Problem/challenge/need Textbooks cost too much
Solution Sponsored support of state/district
customized textbooks
Problem/challenge/need Poor course articulation
with part-time faculty
Solution Use textbooks with associated
professional development training for articulated
course

Higher Ed Value Proposition
Problem/challenge/need
Growing student FTEs
Solution Offering online courses using adjunct
faculty and customizable, high-quality online
course content

Growing student FTEs
Solution Offering online courses using adjunct
faculty and customizable, high-quality online
course content
Online course content can be a byproduct of the
course content development process.
Buying courseware pays for student textbooks.
32Open Textbook Business Model
Higher Ed Value Proposition
- Higher Ed institutional values include
- unlimited use of online course content
- unlimited copies of textbooks for unit price
(cost of printing and binding) - textbooks correlated to state/district
curriculum - teacher professional development
- textbooks with custom cover/front matter
Price 5,000 to 100,000 annual membership fee
33Open Textbook Business Model
Higher Ed Value Proposition
- Results of administrator interviews
- buy online content (school and district) and
custom book (state) values - price points within the range
- two big concerns book quality and faculty
adoption

Higher Ed Value Proposition
but will anybody buy it?
