Class IV C
2WHAT IS ECOLOGY ? WHAT IS AN ECOSYSTEM
? WHAT IS A RIVER ECOSYSTEM?
3STIRONE REGIONAL RIVER PARK
- The Stirone is an affluent of the Taro river. The
park is of great interest in terms of botanic,
palaeontology and zoology. - Palaeontology bi-valve shell animals (Chlamys
opercularis, Venus multilamella, Arctica
islandica ) - -Zoology birds (Riparia riparia
swallows, bee-eaters, beech-marten,
birds of prey like hawk), foxes, hares - Botanic shore plants, willow shrubs, white
poplars
4MACROINVERTEBRATES
- Macroinvertebrates are all the invertebrate
organisms of over 1 mm in size that populate the
river both at adult and larva stages.
E.g. molluscs, anellids, crustaceans, bugs, etc. - They are good indicators of water health because
they - -live in the water for all or most of their life
- -stay in areas suitable for their survival
- are easy to collect
- differ in their tolerance to amount and types of
pollution - are easy to identify in a laboratory
- often live for more than one year
- have limited mobility
- are integrators of environmental condition

6The biological water quality of the river
The EBI
(extended biotic index) method
MATERIALS
-Dichotomous keys -Kick net -Magnifying
glasses -A white, wide-bottomed plastic pan for
orting -Boots -Gloves -Large transfer
pipettes -Glass vials/jars for
specimens -Pincers -Buckets -Plastic Petri
dishes
7The biological water quality of the river
The EBI
(extended biotic index) method
COLLECTING MACROINVERTEBRATES 1. Find an
accessible and safe place to collect the
micro-organisms 2. Place the net so the mouth
of the net is perpendicular to and facing the
flow of the water 3. Stir the bottom with hands
and feet to disturb the creatures 4. Detritus
are filtered and collected by the net 5. Pour
the content of the vial into the bucket.
8The biological water quality of the river
The EBI
(extended biotic index) method
ANALYSIS AND CLASSIFICATION (work table) 1.
Pour the content of the bucket into the plastic
pan 2. Pour some more water to better see the
macro invertebrates 3. Pick the macro
invertebrates up from the pan with pinchers 4.
Insert them into a Petri dish to analyse them
with the magnifying glass 5. Distinguish the
macroinvertebrates using dichotomous keys 6.
List and enumerate the different species found
during the analysis of the micro-organisms.

10CALCULATION OF THE VALUE OF THE E.B.I. INDEX
11CALCULATION OF THE VALUE OF THE E.B.I. INDEX
Vertical column There are the groups of
macroinvertebrates that, from the top to the
bottom, reflect a decreasing sensibility to
pollution
12CALCULATION OF THE VALUE OF THE E.B.I. INDEX
Horizontal column There are some numerical
intervals that refer to the total number of
Systematic Units (S.U.) of macroinvertebrtes
found in the survey station
13CALCULATION OF THE VALUE OF THE E.B.I. INDEX
Inside the table is a value that corresponds to
the E.B.I. index is indicated.
14The biological water quality of the river
The EBI
(extended biotic index) method
RELATION BETWEEN THE E.B.I. VALUE
AND WATER QUALITY CLASS
The biological water quality control gives a
synthetic evaluaztion on the overall
environmental quality and estimates the impact
the different causes of alteration determine on
the communities that colonize the water courses.
