THE ENMR PARTNER AREAS

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MINING REGIONS
  • Often the regions have Objective 1 status
  • The labour market is not gendering equal
  • The scale and the characteristics of mining and
    its spatial, socio-economic, and environmental
    impacts are significant

5
Partner Types and Examples
  • Three types of partners
  • Active and developing mining regions such as
    Sweden, Finland, and Portugal
  • Active but declining mining regions such as
    Poland, Italy, Slovakia
  • Post-mining regions such as Cornwall County (UK)
    and Lower Saxony (DE)
  • Some ENMR partner examples
  • Finland (Six Partners!) The same mining and
    exploration opportunity as Sweden (Fennoscandian
Shield), but much more organized and much more
active in promotion of industry and economic
development. A good model for Sweden to look at.
  • Poland A long and significant legacy of mining,
but mining is on the decline. Migrating from
    coal-fired electrical power generation to
something new. The largest copper mine in Europe
is in Poland. Polish ore potential is not fully
understood yet, but thought to be good by many.
  • Lower Saxony, Germany Coal mining was once very
large, but almost stopped. Many regeneration
projects and societal issues such as
    unemployment, retraining, community
    restructuring.

6

cluster development best practices tool box
  • EU university collaboration on ore mining
    programs
  • Improve minings image through improved public
    knowledge
  • Geo-user group to develop user requirements for
    advanced software applications (geo surveys)
  • Fennoscandian Expoloration and mining showcase to
    Londons investment community
  • Improve economic development competence in small
