2The Mission of the NBPTS is
- To establish high and rigorous standards for what
teachers should know and be able to do.
- To develop and operate a national, voluntary
system to assess and certify teachers who meet
those standards.
- To advance related education reforms to improve
student learning.
3What Should Teachers Knowand be Able to
Do?(Five Core Propositions)
- Teachers are committed to students and their
learning.
- Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to
teach those subjects to all students.
4- Teachers are responsible for managing and
monitoring student learning.
- Teachers think systematically about their
practice and learn from their experiences.
- Teachers play an integral role within their
learning community.
5Who is Eligible?
- NBPTS QUALIFICATIONS
- You are eligible if you
- Hold a bachelors degree.
- Hold a valid state teaching license.
- Have taught a minimum of three years, while
holding a valid license.
6Dale Hickam Excellent Teaching Program
- Each participant must
- Be an employee of a public school.
- Display satisfactory teaching performance as
demonstrated by your last evaluation.
- Agree to pay 65 application processing fee plus
10 (250) of the NBPTS application fee (2,500).
- Agree to teach at least one additional year in a
Florida public school.
- Meet NBPTS qualifications.

Core Propositions, consists of two parts.
- THE PORTFOLIO
- ASSESSMENT CENTER EXERCISES
8 The Portfolio
(completed in the teachers classroom)
- Examples of student work.
- Videotapes or DVD.
- Other teaching artifacts.
- Professional accomplishments which contribute to
student learning.
- Commentary accompanies each entry.
9Each Commentary Discusses
- The goals and purposes of instruction.
- The effectiveness of teacher practices.
- Teacher reflection on the lesson.
- Questions are provided to guide the commentary.
10The Assessment Center
- Six thirty-minute questions.
- Involve challenging issues in teaching.
- Subject content.
- Taken at Sylvan Learning Center.

13How Much Time Do I Have?
- Process must be completed in one school year.
Due date depends on completed registration date.
- Accomplished scores (2.75 or higher) can be
banked for two years.
- Advanced candidates may retake any entry which
was not accomplished.
14Scoring
- Each entry is scored independently (on a scale of
1 to 4).
- Assessors are teachers in the same subject area.
- There are 10 scoring categories.
15Only The Total Matters
- Each entry is weighted.
- The high score on one entry can compensate for a
lower score on another .
- A weighted total score is derived.
- An accomplished score is a total of 2.75, and
that teacher receives National Board
Certification.

18In-Service Points
- Completion of the process (plus some paperwork)
earns 120 in-service points.
Monetary Rewards
- State bonus (10 of the average Florida teacher
salary for the previous year.
19Additional Bonus for Mentoring
TO QUALIFY, NBCTS
- Must mentor candidates AND new teachers.
- Must work an equivalent of 12 work daysoutside
of student contact hours (96 hours).

- calculated as salary
- toward their retirement!

- Currently, the Heartland Educational Consortium
(HEC) boasts 69 National
- Board Certified Teachers.
- Florida ranks second in the nation with
- 7,735 NBCTs. North Carolina ranks first
- with 9,814.
- Nationwide, there are in excess of
- 47,500 NBCTs.

- All pertinent information is available on the
website
- www.nbpts.org .
- Apply online upon completion, download the
verification of application.
- Submit the verification to your district.
232006 Application Cycle
- June 1, 2006 September 15, 2006
- Apply online, pay the 65 application processing
fee, and pay your portion (250) of the
application fee
- REMINDER candidates must answer yes to the
name-release question
- Candidates will then be directed to the FLDOE
promissory note, which MUST be complete to
receive State funding

- District Contacts will verify each candidates
eligibility approve for funding
- Once approved, the application will
electronically transfer to the State
- A subsidy will be paid to NBPTS on the
candidates behalf

27Withdrawal Procedures2006 Application Cycle
- Candidates must notify NBPTS, the State, and
their District Contact of their intent to
withdraw
- A candidate must withdraw by the portfolio due
date (March 31, 2007) to avoid repayment of the
entire 2,250 fee
- If a candidate withdraws properly repays the
required withdrawal fee, they may reapply at a
future date receive the subsidy again
