1How to Make a Personal Web Site

2- CSU gives students free computer accounts
- holly.colostate.edu for undergrads
- lamar.colostate.edu for grad students
- you should already have
- eID (also called your login name)
- Password
- same that you use for your email, for example
3The End Result Today
- make a special folder called public_html in your
account on lamar.colostate.edu or
holly.colostate.edu
- if you put a file called zebra.htm in your
public_html folder, it will be shown on the web
at your web site
- www.lamar.colostate/yourname/zebra.htm
this symbol is called a tilde, at upper left of
keyboard
4Three Steps
- telnet
- set up a special folder called public_html in
your CSU account
- Microsoft Word (or Dreamweaver)
- make HTML pages with graphics and links
this is all Windows software, and I don't know
how to do this with Macintosh
- WS_FTP
- transfer the HTML file to your public_html folder
5Start at the Desktop
Click Run
Click start
6type in telnet and Enter
7type in open lamar.colostate.edu and Enter
- telnet
- set up a special folder called public_html in
your CSU account
- Unix text commands, not especially fun for
right-brain people
8login your login name Password your password
See TERM (ansi) Click the Enter key Get the
prompt
9notice that after gox is a space followed by a
period
chmod gox . mkdir public_html chmod 750 public_
html
chgrp-www -sd public_html logout
- telnet
- now have public_html in your CSU account with
proper "permissions"
- your reward is that nothing visible happens

17- Upload the test file
- use WS_FTP
- put the test file in your public_html folder
- the test file has now been copied to a physical
computer (holly or lamar) located elswhere on the

26A Little Problem
- hallway conversations phone calls
- promise to email something to somebody
- same thing I just emailed to 10 other people
- I have to write the promise in my little
notebook
- I have to remember to read my little notebook
- I actually have to do the job I promised
- lectures
- 100 people all scrambling to take notes
27Basic Issues
I don't want to carry anything.
I don't want to remember anything.
I don't want to do something later.
I don't want to do all this several times.
All I want to do is to say my name.
28Get Your Own Domain Name
A long web address is awkward to communicate
www.lamar.colostate/marysmith/file.htm A
short domain name is easy to communicate
marysmith.com
29most surprising advantage is the simplest
easy access to contact information no transpo
sed telephone numbers
no garbled email addresses

1. Go to netsol.com (networksolutions.com, now
owned by VeriSign) 2. Enter a domain name I en
tered bjostad.com 3. 35 per year to have the nam
e bjostad.com I think this also includes www.bj
ostad.com and Bjostad.com but not sure
4. 12 per year to have web forwarding
I figured I didnt need a separate server to
put files onto right now I have had a web site
on yuma.acns.colostate.edu since 1993
www.colostate.edu/Depts/Entomology/
I just wanted the short name bjostad.com to go
to this existing web site Could have used webax
xs.com for 9.95 per month as web host instead
5. Total was 47 per year for both of these,
domain name (35) and web forwarding (12).
6. I gave the site my credit card number, and
it gave me the following Account Number/Login
Password Vendor Password

7. I changed my new long Account Number to just a
simple name for easier logins www.netsol.com/en
_US/manage-it/edit-password.jhtml
Had to log in with the new long Account Number
and Password to make change 8. I then logged in w
ith just the simple name instead of the long
Account Number (OK) www.netsol.com/en_US/manage
-it/login.jhtml simple name (which replaced th
e Account Number/Login) Password 9. Made a du
mmy file on yuma server just to have a place for
the new name bjostad.com to go to
www.colostate.edu/Depts/Entomology/bjostad/bjost
ad.htm 10. Went in my VeriSign account to the pla
ce where I set up web forwarding
www.netsol.com/en_US/manage-it/domain-list.jhtml
Chose Web Forwarding Service Chose dot com
forwarding Forwarded to www.colostate.edu/Depts
/Entomology/bjostad/bjostad.htm
11. Went into my VeriSign account to Domains and
verified the web forwarding was in progress
