What Are Mechanical Seals?

• Mechanical seals are components that are used to
  seal equipment (rotating ones) to ensure that the
  liquid inside the equipment does not leak out.
• In rotating equipment, there is always a danger
  of the content flowing out between the rotating
  shaft and housing case.
• The mechanical seal, which contains a spring,
  rotary seal face and stationary seal face,
  prevents the liquid of any kind, be it water,
  steam, oil, etc. to come out of the machine, thus
  ensuring its smooth functioning.
• Mechanical seal is used in a variety of
  industries. It is used in pumps, agitators and
  mixers.

What Are Mechanical Seals?

• Although the purpose of all types of seals is
  the same, the type of seal used would depend on
  the industry for which is it is used.
• Different types of mechanical face seals, also
  called duo cone seals, include balanced and
  unbalanced seals, pusher and non-pusher seals,
  conventional mechanical seals and cartridge
  mechanical seals.
• Each of these types has specific characteristics
  that match certain requirements.
• As mechanical seals are quite reliable mainly
  because they prevent 100 leakage and also
  because they last for a long time, they are the
  most commonly used sealants in most industries.

Things to Check whileBuying Mechanical Seals

• Chemical compatibility
• It is important to check whether the materials
  used to make the seal are compatible with the
  fluids or liquids in the system.
• Sometimes, the chemicals in the fluids may not be
  suitable for the material used on the seal.
• For instance, halogens (chlorine, bromine,
  iodine, etc.) are not compatible with Teflon
  coated seals.

• Temperature limits
• There are some temperature limitations that you
  must adhere to while selecting the appropriate
  mechanical seal.
• For instance, seals made of ethylene propylene
  rubber would not be able to prevent leakage of
  fluids above 150 degrees Celsius.
• Moreover, it may also spoil or damage the seal.
  Hence, make sure that the seal you buy can
  withhold the temperature that you need for
  processing.

• Correct fit
• This goes without saying! If the mechanical seal
  does not correctly fit the equipment or machine,
  the chances of leakage becomes high.
• Therefore, it is important to make sure that the
  seals stay together, so that there is no leakage
  or damage to the surfaces.

• As mentioned earlier, mechanical face seals or
  duo cone seals are used because they last for a
  long time.
• When the carbon face of the seal gets worn away,
  it is time to change it.
• However, sometimes leakage happens due to seal
  failure too. This condition can be rectified.
