27 institutes and 9 European countries
  • Total budget 15.9 M, EU contribution 6.5 M
  • Four research themes
  • Theme 1 Changes in ocean chemistry and
    biogeography (past and present)
  • Theme 2 Biological and ecosystem responses,
    acclimation and adaptation (including cold-water
    corals)

    (tipping points)

4
What is ocean acidification?
epoca-project.eu
When CO2 invades sea water bicarbonates
concentration increases carbonate
concentration decreases CaCO3 saturation state
(O) decreases a small part of the bicarbonate
formed dissociates into carbonates H (ocean
acidification)

12
Overall goals
epoca-project.eu
  • Improve the understanding of the past and present
    spatio-temporal changes of ocean acidification
    due to increasing CO2 uptake.
  • Determine the impacts of ocean acidification on
marine biota, their physiology, ecosystems, the
potential for acclimation and adaptation, impacts
on elemental cycling and production of
    climate-relevant gases.
  • Improve understanding of future changes in ocean
chemistry and biogeochemical feedbacks in terms
of hotspots, uncertainties, and thresholds. It
will also improve the description of the carbon
cycle in coupled ocean-climate models. The key
element cycles investigated are carbon, nitrogen,
    sulfur and iron.
  • Synthesize information on tipping points.
