  • Started in late 1950s by Mao ? to mobilize people

    in a short period
  • Three Red Banners ? General Line for Socialist
    Construction, Great Leap Forward and Peoples
    Communes.

The General Line for Socialist Construction
  • Proposed in 1958 by Mao ? to achieve greater,
    faster, better and more economical results ? to
    build socialism in a short period

The Great Leap Forward
  • Proposed in 1958-60 ? mobilized Chinas entire
    population towards high targets for agriculture
    and industry ? brought a new form of socialism ?
    Walking on Two Legs ? set up small-scale
    industries, establish the backyard industries

Impact on Economy
  • Backyard furnaces in villages and neighborhoods

    quality ? Factories were inefficient and
    wasteful
  • Nurse, doctors, teachers, students operated
    furnaces ? lack of skills in operating these
    furnaces lack of equipments ? lots of
    injuries and death.
