Three Red Banners

• Started in late 1950s by Mao ? to mobilize people
  and increase agricultural and industrial output
  in a short period
• Three Red Banners ? General Line for Socialist
  Construction, Great Leap Forward and Peoples
  Communes.

The General Line for Socialist Construction

• Proposed in 1958 by Mao ? to achieve greater,
  faster, better and more economical results ? to
  build socialism in a short period

The Great Leap Forward

• Proposed in 1958-60 ? mobilized Chinas entire
  population towards high targets for agriculture
  and industry ? brought a new form of socialism ?
  Walking on Two Legs ? set up small-scale
  industries, establish the backyard industries

Impact on Economy

• Backyard furnaces in villages and neighborhoods
  unskilled worker ? iron and steels were of low
  quality ? Factories were inefficient and
  wasteful
• Nurse, doctors, teachers, students operated
  furnaces ? lack of skills in operating these
  furnaces lack of equipments ? lots of
  injuries and death.
• No private processions ? Lack of incentive to

Impact on Agriculture

• Peasants were involved in the large-scale project
  such as building dams, reservoirs organized by
  the People's Communes ? the agricultural aspect
  was neglected ? Food production decreased
• The figures of agricultural production were
  exaggerated ? Peasants suffered form poor harvest
  and famine
