Major Characteristics1776-1790
  • The new colonies (modern day America) was
    fighting their mother country of England for
    their independence.
  • Pieces of literature outline the events occurring
    such as war, power, and advances in the world.

Major Historical Events
  • 1776 Thomas Paines Common sense. In May,
    Congress authorizes colonies to write
    constitution. July 2nd Congress declares
    Independence. July 4th the declaration of
    Independence was signed.
  • 1777 America has a flag. It consists of 13
    alternating red and white stripes and blue field
    with white stars.

Prominent People of the Time Period
  • Thomas Jefferson. Wrote notes on the state of
    Virginia. He was the third president of the
    United States. Also he was the principle drafter
    of the Declaration of Independence.
  • James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay
    created a federalist newspaper.
  • Napoleon Bonaparte (1769- 1812) He was a military
    genius and he consolidated many reforms of the
    French Revolution.

  • George Washington (1732-1799) He was the first
    president of the United States and was considered
    to be The father of the United states.
  • Thomas Paine. He wrote the book Common sense.
  • Patrick Henry. In 1775 he gave a speech famous
    for the line Give me liberty or give me
    death.
  • Paul Revere. Famous for his mid-night ride.

  • Thomas Paine (1737-1774) He was born in England
    and Came to America in 1774.
  • He first published African Slavery in America
    criticizing slavery as being unjust and inhumane
    in America. Another book he wrote was Common
    Sense. It stated that independence most come
    sooner or later. All the arguments for
    separation of England are based on nothing more
    than simple facts, plain arguments and common
    sense.
  • Other books that Paine wrote American crisis,
    Rights of man, and Age of Reason.

  • Patrick Henry (1736-1799) He was born in
    Virginia. Was seen as a radical-post British
    tyranny.
  • His Stamp act Resolutions were the first shot
    fired in the Revolutionary war.
  • In 1764 he was elected to the house of Burgesses
    and became leading radical. He served three
    times as governor of Virginia.
  • He urged his Fellow Virginians with the words I
    know not what course others may take give me
    liberty or give me death.

  • Plilip Freneau The poet of the Revolution
  • Fought as a militiaman in the revolutionary war.
    Was captured by two British ships in 1780.
    During that time he wrote The British prison
    ship and shows cruelties of Britain.
  • Revolutionary Poems that he wrote Eutaw
    springs and Americans Liberty
  • In 1971 he became the first powerful newspaper
    editor in America.
  • With writing poems, Freneau adhered to his
    democratic ideas.

  • He drafted the Declaration of Independence. The
    Declaration of Independence represented the
    thirteen colonies in North America announcing
    separation from Britain.
  • Thomas served as the governor of Virginia in

  • 1783-1784, He was a member of continental
    congress.

  • Abigail Adams (1744-1818)
  • She was the wife of president John Adams.
    Abigail was the chief figure in the social life
    of her husbands administration. She was one of
    the most influential first ladies.
  • Her letters to her husband are a vivid source of
    social history. They tell stories of the woman
    who stayed at home to struggle with war time
    shortage, to run the farm and to teach and take
    care of the children.

  • Famous composers heard in this time included
    Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven.
  • Most songs from this time often had reference to
    the lives around the writers. (war, soldiers,
    high taxes, criticism, monarchy)
  • Some examples are Yankee Doodle, Young Ladies
    in Town, Bunker Hill, The Liberty Song and
    Barbara Allen.

  • Knitting homespun goods during the Revolutionary
    War period became a form of social protest
    against British importation of textile goods and
    the taxes imposed on goods.
  • As the Revolutionary War continued, towns
    required their citizens to produce knitted socks
    and other clothing for the soldiers.

  • The typical clothing that boys wore were Hat,
    cravat, waist coat, coat, shirt, breeches,
    stockings and shoes.
  • The typical clothing that girls wore were Cap,
    bodice, stomacher, gown, petticoat and shoes.
