Yosemite Prototype NASA remote sensing data,
ecosystem modeling ground data used to
investigate capability for continuous park-wide
monitoring of ecosystem condition.
  • (Current phase) Continuous, near real-time,
park-wide monitoring of ecosystem conditions at a
    minimum resolution of 1-km.
  • Short-term forecasting of a suite of parameters
related to ecosystem function through the
integration of NASA remote sensing data and
    ecosystem models.
  • On-demand acquisition and delivery of
    high-resolution satellite data for periodic
monitoring of critical habitats or events within
    a park.
  • Implementation of hydrologic and ecosystem models
to facilitate high resolution model runs for
evaluation of the impacts of alternate management
scenarios on hydrologic and vegetative patterns
    in the park.

RESEARCH ATLAS A Data Sharing Application for the
Sonoran Desert Regional Ecosystem Monitoring
Project
  • Query content and location of research projects
  • Functional system for the eleven SODN parks
    currently under development
  • Planned future expansion to Huachuca Mountains
Grassland Valley Complex in southern Arizona to
test functionality as an interagency data

White Pine Blister Rust Database Brent Frakes
  • Blister rust (Cronartium ribicola) introduced to
North America in early 20th century
  • Spread throughout the range of western
    five-needled white pines
  • Ecosystem Disruption
  • Soil erosion
  • Modified Snowmelt
  • Species Regeneration
  • Habitat
  • Food
  • Logistical Problems
  • International (US and Canada)
  • Inter-agency (USFS, NPS, BLM)
  • Lack of database
  • Lack of protocol

23
White Pine Blister Rust Database
  • Addresses needs of three network parks
  • Possible vital sign
  • Collaborated with Whitebark Pine Ecosystem
Foundation (WPEF), US Forest Service, and Parks
    Canada
  • Developed a database to match protocol
  • Common database fostersinteragency coop. on
    protocol and management

Vegetation Map Review Procedures
Northeast Region Inventory and Monitoring Program
  • Northeast Region has developed and documented a
detailed set of procedures for reviewing
    vegetation map products.
  • Digital Vegetation Map Products
  • - Spatial data (points and polygons)
  • - Metadata
  • - Tabular data (PLOTS database)
  • - Final report
  • - Photos
  • Goals of the detailed data review
  • - ensure consitency between products
  • - reduce errors
  • - define minimum standards

Integrating IM vegetation monitoring with Fire
Effects monitoring and Exotic Plant Management
Team activities
  • The Northern Great Plains Fire Effects program
has been collecting vegetation data from burn
    units for several years.
  • The NGPN IM Program will be collecting
    vegetation data throughout the parks.
  • By integrating Fire Effects and IM vegetation
monitoring numerous benefits can be realized.
    They include

29
  • Effectively doubling the sample size for the IM
    Program with no additional cost
  • Allowing the Fire Effects to compare changes
across burn and non-burn (i.e., control) units
  • Greater efficiencies in recruiting seasonals,
travel costs, data management, GIS analyses,
    reporting, and other tasks
  • Happier park staff because they are being visited
by only one vegetation monitoring crew
