2NASA Direct Readout Program Vision
- Unification of the Global Direct Readout
Community for data democratization and
understanding of Earth processes as a system
3NASA Direct Readout Program
NASA Direct Readout Program
The Direct Readout Laboratory (DRL) acting as
the implementation arm of NASAs Direct Readout
Program endeavors to Enable - The
utility of NASAs Earth science data -
Technologies for decision-support
infrastructure - Technology solutions
for real-time and regional applications
- Continuity among missions to minimize
end-user impact - Real-time
applications support systems Provide - Data
transport tools for NASAs Earth science data -
Real-time data processing tools that are modular,
scalable, portable extensible - Utility via
the promotion of standards in pre processing
sub-systems, Science Procesing Algorithms (SPAs)
interfaces, visualization and real-time
processing systems - A direct readout test
environment for the commercial sector Identify
and understand the needs of a global community
that use NASAs Direct Broadcast data.
- Promote synergy between NASA, the community
and interdependent direct
broadcast data users - Act as a
technical conduit between the mission and the
public Guide the direct readout community and
NASAs Direct Broadcast Earth science missions.
- Bridge mission planning based on
lessons learned and the
establishment that use NASA Direct Broadcast
- To provide technical and implementation
insight to new missions that wish
to use Direct Broadcast - Educate on
the importance and utility of NASAs data

9Preparing for NPP HRD-NISGS Update-
10What is the NISGS ?
NASA Direct Readout Program
What is NISGS ?
- The NPP In-Situ Ground System (NISGS) is an
Element of the NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) - NISGS directly supports the Technology Insertion
and NPOESS Risk Reduction objectives - Provides technology insertion for NPOESS, which
will assure that the NPOESS High Rate Data (HRD)
design will be readily usable for Field Terminal
users. - IPOPP
- Enables the user community to readily transition
from existing POES/Terra/Aqua DB data to NPP and
NPOESS HRD data. - Emphasis on modularity for freedom of choice
11NASA Direct Readout Program
NISGS Deliverables
- Direct Broadcast Science Data Record (SDR)
Algorithms for all NPP Instruments - SPA wrapped
- Technology Tools to enable ingest, pre-processing
and real-time monitoring of any Direct Broadcast
Data Record (xDR) - Provide beta version of deliverables 1 yr prior
to launch

19Key Points
NASA Direct Readout Program
- Together were building the foundation for the
next generation direct readout - The DRL and its partners are developing
technology tools and making available science
processing algorithms (SPAs) on the road to NPP
and NPOESS - Therefore we need your participation, input and
guidance - The DRL and its partners want to increase the use
and utility of Earth science data
