Relationships
3Bibliographic Relationships Definition
- Bibliographic Relationships exist when two or
more bibliographic entities (works, items,
documents, objects, etc.) are associated with
each other in some way
4Bibliographic Relationship Types
- Whole-Part
- Derivative
- Accompanying
- Equivalence
- Sequential
- Descriptive
- Shared Characteristic
5Shared Characteristics
- A relationship that exists between bibliographic
entities that are not otherwise related, but have
some characteristic in common (e.g., author,
title, subject, language, publisher, etc.)
6Derivative Relationship
- A relationship that exists between any new
conception of a work and its original source (the
progenitor), or a successor, or both
7Types of Derivative Relationships
- Simultaneous derivations
- Successive derivations
- Translations
- Amplifications
- Extractions
- Adaptations
- Performances
- Predecessor derivations
8Whole-Part Relationship
- A relationship that exists between a segment or
component part of a bibliographic entity and its
whole
9Accompanying Relationship
- A relationship that exists between the primary
musical entity and the complementary material
that occurs with it
10Equivalence Relationship
- A relationship that exists between exact copies
of the same manifestation of a work, or between
an original item and a reproduction of it, when
the intellectual content and authorship are
preserved
11Sequential Relationship
- A relationship that exists between bibliographic
entities that precede or continue one another,
with the aspects of chronology and sequence, but
are not derivative
12Descriptive Relationship
- A relationship that exists between a
bibliographic entity and a description,
criticism, or evaluation of that entity

14Primary Relationships
- Those relationships that are implicit among the
bibliographic entities of work, expression,
manifestation, and item
15Sibling Relationships
- Those relationships that exist between various
expressions of a work, various manifestations of
an expression, and various copies (i.e., items)
of a manifestation
16Content Relationships
- Those relationships where the content is in a
transitory state, forming a continuum of
intellectual or artistic content starting from an
original (progenitor) work - equivalence relationships
- derivative relationships
- descriptive relationships
17Whole-Part Part-Part Relationships
- This separate grouping includes
- accompanying relationships
- sequential relationships
18Responsibility (Agent) Relationships
- A relationship that exists between a
bibliographic entity and the persons or corporate
bodies that are responsible for some action
related to the entity (author, composer,
producer, publisher, etc.)
19Subject Relationships
- A relationship that exists that exists between
works and entities that can be subjects, i.e.
another work, expression, manifestation, item,
person, corporate body, concept, object, event,
or place
