HISTORY
The Cheyenne tribal flag.
3CULTURAL FEATURES
- During our vacation, we met 10 bands of Cheyenne
Indians. These bands live spread out across the
Great Plains. Because we wanted to meet all the
tribes, we traveled from Colorado to South
Dakota. - We found that all the tribes practiced Shamanism.
In this, they dance and practice medicine. We
found it very funny that they used our techniques
of ecstasy to heighten the intensity of the
ceremony.
4CULTURE CONT.
- One of the dances that they preformed for us was
the Sun Dance. This was extremely interesting
because they are one of the few tribes that
present it in its most elaborate form. During the
ceremony, the Cheyenne dance, sing, drum, have
visions, and sometimes experiment with
self-torture. - As you know, most cultures have gods. The
Cheyenne are no different, they recognize The
Wise One Above and a God Beneath the Ground, four
spirits that live at the points of the compass.
SUN DANCE
5CULTURE CONT.
- Like we do today, the Cheyenne value certain
objects too. These objects include a sacred
bundle, hats made from the skin and hair of
buffalo, and four arrows, two for hunting and two
for battle.
6The Great Plains and the Indian tribes that live
in that area.
7During the winter months the Cheyenne set up the
camp in a sheltered area near water. The rest of
the year they are nomadic and follow the buffalo.
We noticed that they used the buffalo for food,
clothes, tipi covers, and tools.
While traveling with them, we noticed all the
different types of clothing they wear. These
include moccasins, breechcloths, shirts, and one
piece dresses. However, in winter they wear
leggings and buffalo robes. One neat feature
about their summer wear is the fringe on their
clothing. We found that it comes in handy for
swatting the many prairie bugs and used as a
quick fix for lashing things together.
