Living
  • The Algonquin Indians lived in Southern Quebec
    and Eastern Ontario, Canada
  • The Algonquin Indians lived in wigwams
  • Now, for the most part, they live in modern homes
  • The picture is an example of a wigwam, but is not
    specifically Algonquin

Food
  • The Algonquin were a semi-nomadic people and they
    were hunter-gatherers
  • There was little farming done and food was
    primarily from hunting and fishing (done by men)
  • Women gathered berries and other wild plants to
    add to the meat
  • They would sometimes trade with nearby tribes for
    corn and occasionally maple syrup from tree sap

Dress
  • Men and women generally wore their hair in two
    long braids
  • Women wore long dresses with removable sleeves
  • Men wore breechcloths with leather pant legs tied
    onto them
  • Both men and women painted their faces and arms
    with bright colors and wore moccasins

Crafts
  • They were known for their beadwork and basketry
  • They created wampum with white and purple shell
    beads for regalia, currency, and records of
    important events
  • These often told a story and/or represented a
    family affiliation

  • Algonquin is the language spoken by the Algonquin
    tribe
  • Algonquian is the language family that Algonquin
    is a part of
  • The Algonquin language is not related to ancient
    Hebrew, Egyptian, or any other Semitic languages

Transportation and Weapons
  • The Algonquin people were well-known for their
    birch bark canoes
  • On land they usually walked
  • They had snow shoes and sleds to help during
    winter
  • The Algonquin used bows and arrows, spears and
    knives for hunting and warfare
  • They used spears for catching fish
