DMLR Mission

• To achieve passage of medical liability reform in
  the United States Senate

DMLR Campaign

• Need 60 votes in Senate --- currently we have 48
  votes
• Focus on those United States Senators that have
  voted against medical liability reform
• States that are having a medical liability crisis
• States where the Senators are up for re-election

DMLR Launched

• On February 10, 2004 the DMLR Campaign was
  officially launched
• Press conference in Washington, DC with physician
  representatives from each of the organizations in
  DMLR
• Simultaneous press conferences in Washington and
  North Carolina

First Targets for DMLR

• North Carolina
• State that is having a medical liability crisis
• Senator John Edwards has consistently voted
  against medical liability reform
• Edwards not running for re-election --- whoever
  is the new Senator, they need to understand the
  importance of voting for medical liability reform

• State that is having a medical liability crisis
• Both Senators (Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell)
  have consistently voted against medical liability
  reform
• Murray is up for re-election. Rep. George
  Nethercutt is her likely opponent in November
  Nethercutt supports medical liability reform

• On February 11th, DMLR ran full-page newspaper
  advertisements in the Wall Street Journal, USA
  Today and the Washington Post
• Advertisements focused on how the medical
  liability crisis is affects the economy of
  Washington state

• Major component of DMLR campaign is centered on
  grassroots
• Two opportunities
• Coalition building in DMLR states with doctors,
  patients and community leaders
• DMLR website allows you to email your Senators
  and urge them to support medical liability reform
