3Introduction
- Poverty Assessment survey was conducted in 2001.
This survey is nationally representative of 1800
households from the population. Data collection
was undertaken between August and November 2001. - We have defined a poverty line as the minimum
expenditure needed to purchase a food basket that
provides 2100 calorie per person per day and a
allowance for essential non food consumption. - The poverty line is estimated US 15.44 per
capita per month in 2001.

- The west region is home to one fifth of the
population , but it accounts for
