6 Common Fabric Choices for Curtains
  • When making a decision on a choice of fabric for
your curtains, it helps to be aware of the
different choices available to you and what
    fabric suits what style.
  • While a professional interior decorator can help
make the choice for you, you can always go
shopping for fabrics yourself. The following
materials are some of the most common used in
    making curtains.

Materials Used in Making Curtains
  • Cambric - Made out of linen or cotton, cambric
is a fabric which is woven tightly and has a
glossy and stiff appearance on one side. This
makes it a perfect fabric for more decorative
rooms and should not be hung from cheap or
    discount curtain rods .
  • Chintz - A cotton fabric, chintz is usually used
for drapery due to its glazed finish.
  • Damask -Damask usually contains raised designs
and should be used with layers of other thinner
materials which might mean installing triple
    curtain rods.

  • Velvet - Usually used in more pre 20th century
style interiors, velvet is made from cotton,
rayon and polyester and should be used in formal
    dining or sitting rooms.
  • Gingham - Gingham can be washed regularly and is
crisp like Ironed linen and is one of the most
    practical fabrics to use.
  • Brocade - Used for drapes, Brocade is made from
cotton, wool or silk and is a pretty heavy
fabric. Usually found with raised floral and
    natural image designs.
  • With this basic knowledge of fabrics, you should
be able to narrow down your choice based on the
look you are trying to achieve and the budget you
    are working with.
