6
How Do We Do This???
  • Through Three Levels of Instruction

7
Level 1
The Level of CONTENT
8
1
  • Distribution Studies
  • CNW Sequence
  • Modern Language
  • The Academic Majors
  • Professional Studies and Experiences

9
Level 2
The Level of PROCESS
10
2
  • How things are done
  • Continuous interactive learning experiences
which model and practice best practices
  • In courses which

11
In Courses which
  • are collaborative/cooperative in character
  • are experiential with a performance
    orientation
  • involve pervasive problem solving
  • include critical dialogue through the
    writing-questioning conversation
  • all inthree level discourse assessment and
    feedback system

12
And So Level 2 Becomes Part of Level 1
The Level of CONTENT
The Level of PROCESS
13
Level 3
The Level of SELF
14
3
  • The shaping and reshaping ofself image so that
the prospective teacher becomes more conscious of
his or her ability to shape the educational
    process by

15
By
  • The examination of beliefs, values attitude, and
behavior in a journey of the discovery of self
    and the other I-It ? I-Thou
  • The development of critical thinking capabilities
    and a reflective disposition

16
  • And so level 3, the self, becomes part of the
psychological content of levels 1 and 2

17
The Level of
SELF
The Level of PROCESS
The Level of CONTENT
18
How does WC meet these contents?
  • This learning structure takes place within the
mood and philosophy of the Liberal Arts and
    Sciences at Washington College

19
Our Beliefs
  • 1. The Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum has
each student examine in the humanities our
    creative-expressive selves in the social
sciences our identities as social beings living
in communities and in the fields of mathematics
and natural sciences dimensions of the physical
    world in which we live

20
Continued
  • Additionally, the CNW first year experience has
students examine aspects of human experience at
three levels, the local, the national, and the
global, developing a range of cultural
perspectives. Finally through the study of a
    non-English language, students look at
    alternative symbol systems, identifying the
    interaction between perception and language.

21
And so...
  • It is the belief of this institution in espousing
this educational philosophy, that the individual
is enriched and strengthened in what will
ultimately be his or her vocational choice, by
being first able to deal with ideas in their
    cultural, intellectual, scientific, and universal
    contexts...

22
What does this provide?
  • This foundation provides an intellectual
stability and discrimination, and a breadth
of vision which are unique strengths in the
    aspiring teacher.
