Regional Situation

• There has been a general increase in the
  consumption of packaged goods and other
  waste-related products in all the four Island
  States
• The human generation of solid wastes has
  increased
• Poor solid wastes collection service is in place
• There is generally a lack of appropriate land for
  the siting of disposal facilities
• Explosion in vermin and mosquitoes, which are
  disease-vectors, is common in many parts of
  Madagascar and Comoros
• Overall, solid wastes have been found to clog up
  drains leading to flooding
• There is an overall lack of in-country know-how
  to deal with the disposal of the waste
• Some solid wastes would degrade or leach
  chemicals over time with long-term effects
