7A Brief History
- In the 1750s, William Parsons and Nicholas Scull
were searching for a location to build a town.
They came to a spot the Native Americans called
Lechawitauk or The Place at Forks. - The site was originally selected and surveyed by
Thomas Penn, the son of William Penn, and
Beniamin Eastburn, who was the surveyor general.
This tract of land was located at the point
where the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers meet. - On July 8, 1776, The Great Square, which is now
known as Center Square, was the location for one
of only three readings of the Declaration of
Independence!
?You are a surveyor, looking for new land. What
does the area look like in the 1750s? Are there
any structures? Would building be difficult?
What obstacles might you face?Take a moment to
write about it in your Trip Journal .

postcard, and a tray of watercolors and create a
picture for it, based on what youve learned. On
the back side, write a brief message to someone
at home that you care about. Tell them about
your experience on the virtual field trip Where
your postcard is from, what you saw there, what
you learned, what you found interesting. Address
your postcard, but remember, dont show it to
anyone! Hand your completed postcard to me and I
will take them to the post office and mail them.
- After your postcard arrives at home, talk to the
person you sent it to, and ask them what they
think about it. Ask them if they have ever been
to or heard of this place or if they would like
to go there now because of your postcard. - Finally, bring your postcard back to school and
we will have a class discussion about what
