Who we are

• Tulane Outreach Romania is a Tulane University
  School of Medicine student interest group. Our
  mission is to improve health care and education
  in rural Romania.
• 12 Tulane medical students, 5 physicians, 1 nurse
  and 1 volunteer.

Who are we

Our aims

• Provide scholarships for children to attend high
  school.
  
• Provide specialty medical care for 2 rural
  villages in impoverished areas over the course of
  10 days/year.
  
• Direct collaboration with Romanian doctors,
  medical students, teachers and community members
  to achieve and expand this mission.

Goals

• To raise funds for the Dean J. C. Pisano
  Scholarship which supports a talented yet
  financially in-need student from rural areas.
  
• To facilitate an annual 10 day long trip to
  Romania and provide local denizens with
  specialized consultations.

• Bacau County Gioseni Tamasi villages

Exactly what well do

• 1. Cardiology/Ob/Gyn/Peds care
• Hands-on learning experience.
• Pap smears, EKG, ultrasounds, etc.
• 2. Collect data on above
• 3. Community health needs assess-- develop
  public health initiative/intervention

Why rural Romania?

• Infant mortality- 15.3/1,000 in 2003 (EU average
  
• Current specialty care availability-available,
  but barriers prevents many
  
• Situation (decreased life expectancy, decreased
  living standards in rural areas, decreased,
  economic power)

Long term goals

• Establish solid long term relationship between
  Tulane Romanian villages/doctors/students.
  
• Increase number of scholarships and help increase
  rural education resources.

• Improve access to specialty care year round
• -survey to assess current barriers and how
  to overcome them
  
• -primary care in-service- provide PCPs with
  teaching sessions in specialty fields.
  
• Link intl supply need with US excess.
