Economic Community
The inscription reads 50 PENCE and above it is
the year of issue. Nine hands are clasped
together, meant to represent the nine members of
the European Community at the time. The way the
hands are clasped together shows trust,
assistance and friendship.

Ministers and the completion of the Single
European Market
The inscription on this coin reads 50 PENCE and
gives the years in which the UK was the President
of the council of Ministers of the European
Union. The picture is of a table with twelve
chairs (one for each member state at the time)
and the lines between the chairs show how the
nations in the community form a network The
twelve stars represent the twelve nations, with
the largest star representing Britain.

This design represents the Allied invasion force
heading for Normandy filling the sea and sky.

Union, and the 25th Anniversary of the United
Kingdom's accession to the European Economic
Community
The design shows 12 stars from the flag of the
European Union arranged in a celebratory pattern.
This is to celebrate the United Kingdom being the
President of the European Union It also shows the
years 1973 and 1998, to mark the 25th anniversary
of the UK joining the European Economic Community.

A pair of hands set against a pattern of
radiating lines with the words FIFTIETH
ANNIVERSARY and the value 50 PENCE, accompanied
by the letters NHS which appear five times on
the outer border.

The turning pages of a book, the anniversary
dates 1850 and 2000, and the value 50
PENCE, all above a classical library building on
which appear the words PUBLIC LIBRARIES
and within the pediment representations of
compact discs an allusion to modern forms of
learning.

Social and Political Union
The figure of a suffragette chained to railings
and holding a banner on which appear the letters
WSPU, to the right a ballot paper marked with a
cross and the words GIVE WOMEN THE VOTE, to the

the far right the anniversary dates 1903 and
2003.
