Title: WORD PROBLEM
1Scale and Proportion
- WORD PROBLEM!
- By Helena Burgess and Sophia King!
2Jay has a dolls house. She likes to make
furniture for her dolls that is just like things
in her own home. She has to make objects smaller
than they really are. Jay uses a scale of g a
table 0.5cm equal to 10cm.
31. Jay is making a table for the dining room. Her
real dining room table is 1 metre high, 1.4
metres wide and 1.6 metres long. What will be the
measurements for her dolls house table?
4REMEMBER! Jay uses a scale of 0.5 cm equal to 10
cm. !
First we need to find out how many 0.5 cm are in
1 metre. Remember 100cm 1 metre For every 10
cm, the dolls house measurement 0.5cm. So for
every 20cm , the dolls house measurement 2
lots of 0.5cm 1cm There are 5 lots of 20 cm in
100 cm so we need 5 lots of 1 cm 5cm (lots
of multiply)
5Jays table is really 1 metre high 100 cm (
5 lots of 20cm)
1.4 metres wide 140 cm ( 7 lots of 20cm)
1.6 metres long 160
cm ( 8 lots of 20cm) And if 20cm really equals 1
cm for her scale then Her dolls house table
will be 5 cm high, 7 cm wide and 8 cm long.
62. Jay wants to make a T.V. for the lounge. Her
real T.V. is 80cm high, 50cm wide and 25cm deep.
7Remember!! Jays real TV is 80cm high, 50cm wide
and 25cm deep.
If there are 10 lots of 8 in 80 and there are 2
lots of 0.5 in 1, you have to halve how many 10s
there are in 80. Or work out how many 20 cm are
in each measurement as we know that 20 cm 1
cm 4 x 20cm 80cm so the TV must be 4 cm high
2.5 x 20cm 50cm so the TV must be 2.5
cm wide and 1.25 x 20cm 25cm so the TV
must be 1.25 cm deep
8Can you work in reverse?? What is the size of the
real object if these are three sizes of items
of dolls house furniture? 3. Bath 7.5 cm
long 5cm wide and 4cm high 4. Bookcase 10 cm
tall 1.5 m wide and 2.5 cm deep 5. Plant and
plant pot plant 12cm tall, pot 1cm tall
diameter of 1.5cm
