  • Literary Autobiography

2
The Early Years
  • I couldnt remember what was read to me early on,
so I asked my mother. She told me I loved all of
the Golden Books, but my favorite book was The
    Poky Little Puppy.

3
  • She also said I would listen to the Disney
Books when she read to my older brother.

4
  • I do remember having several books in our house.
My mother was an avid reader, and she constantly
had a book in her hand.

5
School Experiences
  • Elementary

6
  • My first book I remember reading was Buffy and
Mack in Kindergarten. It was an assigned book
with several stories in it. We were only
supposed to read the first story Sun Up, but I
came back the next day having read the whole
    book.

7
  • That is when it became apparent that my reading
level was higher than my classmates. I tested
out of all the required reading for the year
before the first quarter was over. Thankfully my
teacher continued to foster my ability to read by
giving me interesting books to read daily.

8
First Bad Experience
  • My first book that I remember not liking was A
Wrinkle in Time. I had to read it in 4th grade.
Part of my distaste for the book was due to
going to a 6th grade room to read because they
had an advanced reading group that was reading
it. Needless to say, Ive never enjoyed reading
    Science Fiction again.

My Favorites
  • During this time I was introduced to The
Baby-sitters Club and Sweet Valley Twins
    series.
  • I read every book that was published in the
    series during that time.
  • Plus, I wanted to create my own Baby-sitters
Club. (Most girls who read it wanted to also)

My Nickname
  • I loved the library, but more importantly, BOOK
ORDERS!!! Oh, how I loved Book Order time. My
Mom ordered so many books, that it didnt matter
if anyone else in the class ordered, we met the
minimum requirement for the class to order by
    ourselves.
  • Due to this enjoyment, I my friends gave me the
    nickname

Junior High
14
  • Despite the increased reading load I had in
school, I continued to follow my mothers
footsteps. I now became the avid reader.
  • In Jr. High, I continued reading the two series,
but I also got hooked on R.L Stine (before his
Goosebumps series) and Christopher Pike. I
called them murder mysteries, they categorized
them as teen horror novels. I also began
reading real-life murder stories too. This is
probably why I am now hooked on crime scene T.V.
    shows.

15
High School
16
  • In High School, I continued the teen horror
novels, but I was blessed to have a teacher that
went outside the box. She didnt do the
required books everyone else was reading. My
senior year she had us read Savage Inequalities
by Jonathan Kozol. He became my favorite author.
This book showed me how lucky I was to go to
school that had books. Even more lucky to have
the ability and opportunity to read. I thank God
for her allowing us to read this important book.

17
Adulthood
18
  • My passion for reading has not changed since
Ive become an adult. I read for pleasure, for
learning, and when it is required. I still enjoy
a great murder mystery, but the authors that I
choose are much different. I think Jonathan
Kozol will always be my favorite author, and I
cant wait until his new book comes out this
    August.

19
  • More importantly now, I read for my daughter to
learn to love to read. We have many books in our
household, and book orders are still a priority
in our house. I love to watch my daughter circle
15 books that she wants to get when the book
order forms arrive in her folder. I knew that
she had taken on my passion to read when she
spent her birthday money (21) on books at the
    Book Fair.

20
  • Reading time is a priority in our house.
Sometimes we read together, other times we sit on
the couch and read our separate books. Our
reading time is a time that I cherish, and enjoy
more than all other things we do together.

21
  • I believe there is nothing more important than
teaching a child to love to read.
