BACKGROUND
  • The EPI was launched in Nigeria in 1979 and
    attainment of UCI target coverage of 80 was
    reported in 1990.
  • The years after 1990 witnessed major decline in
    vaccination coverage due to
  • Low political will and social support
  • Inadequate service funding
  • Poor community involvement / participation
  • Ad-hoc approach to National/Local Mobilization
    efforts and other challenges such as

  • Anti-OPV campaigns-vaccine safety/Religious
    Cultural issues.
  • Negative press coverage
  • Postponement of SIAs
  • Fatigue due to repeated SIAs
  • Communities getting wrong signals
  • Social mobilization gains threatened.
  • Programmatic challenges.

BACKGROUND
  • Federation and ICRC was invited to join WHO,
    UNICEF, CDC and Rotary by TCG in the Global Polio
    Eradication Initiative in July 2000.
  • WHO designated Nigeria to synchronize with 16
    countries in West / Central African Sub-Region.
  • The Federation supported the NRCS to intensify
    its Social Mobilization efforts through the
    Interagency Coordinating Committee (ICC).
  • The National Society actively participated in all
    rounds of the Supplementary Immunization
    Activities (SIAs) from 2000 to date.

2003 World Polio Virus (WPV) Status
  • Over 300 cases of WPV were reported between
    January to December 2003. Nigeria accounts for
    about 50 of all WPV cases globally.
  • WPV cases were reported in 23 out of 37 States in
    Nigeria.
  • Northern States (Polio endemic States) are
    re-infecting previously polio-free states such as
    Lagos, Ogun, Adamawa and Taraba.
  • WPV cases in other countries traced to Nigeria.

OBJECTIVES
  • Increase community participation, acceptance and
    demand for OPV and routine immunization.
  • Facilitate Polio Eradication through social
    mobilization
  • Improve routine immunization coverage
  • Strengthen partnership

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
  • The National Society with technical and financial
    support from the Federation, supports the
    National Programme on Immunization (NPI) under
    the umbrella of Interagency Coordinating
    Committee (ICC) in the Polio Eradication
    Initiative.
  • Participation at ICC, NSMC Meetings, Planning,
    Trainings and Debriefing with NPI and other
    Partners.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
  • Volunteer recruitment and training using ARCHI
    2010 framework with coaches and community
    volunteers
  • Integration of activities with relevant
    authorities and other stakeholders (NGOs and
    CBOs).
  • Commitment and support from National Societys
    Governance and the entire Management.
  • Sustain local network of volunteers with other
    NGOs and Stakeholders.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
  • The National Society has enjoyed partnership with
    FMOH, UNICEF, WHO, USAID, Rotary and other PEI
    Partners through ICC.
  • NRCSs participation at the International and
    National Review committee has strengthened
    linkages with major stakeholders of Polio
    Eradication Initiative in Nigeria.
  • Training and sharing of experiences with
    Federation and other ICC partners such as WHO,
    UNICEF etc has given the National Society an edge
    over most NGOs in the PEI.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
  • ICC guidelines mandated the inclusion of Red
    Cross representative in Social Mobilization
    Committees at all levels thus, enhanced
    visibility of Red Cross among all stakeholders.
  • NRCS is represented in Social Mobilization
    Committees in 37 States of the Federation and 774
    Local Government Areas.

ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Over 44 million children under five were
    mobilized during SNIDs and Mop-up Exercises.
  • Over 70,000 Community / Religious Leaders were
    sensitized by Red Cross volunteers.
  • Over 5,500 volunteers were trained and mobilized
    on social mobilization.
  • Advocacy kits and souvenirs were produced and
    distributed.
