EPC global
  • A new global standards system that combines RFID
    (radio frequency identification) technology,
    existing communications network infrastructure
and the Electronic Product Code (a number for
uniquely identifying an item) to enable immediate
and automatic identification and tracking of an
item through the whole supply chain globally,
resulting in improved efficiency and visibility
    of the supply chain.

11
GS1 GDSN
  • The Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN)
    is an automated, standards-based, global
environment that enables secure and continuous

Some frequently asked questions about GS1
18
What is EDI?
  • In the decade of the 90s and beyond, the accurate
and prompt acquisition, manipulation and use of
information needed to manage any organisation,
will distinguish the highly competitive and
profitable company from the rest. Today, a vast
majority of data in commercial paper documents is
    generated from existing computer applications.
These paper documents are printed and copied
before the information they contain is finally
communicated by mail or fax. The business partner
in turn re-keys all this information into the
computer application for further processing. This
is extremely cumbersome and costly. The need for
a faster, cheaper and more accurate solution for
exchanging commercial data has become a
significant priority for a large number of
    companies.
  • The solution lies in ELECTRONIC DATA INTERCHANGE
    (EDI).
  • The implementation of EDI demands a much greater
degree of co-operation, collaboration and a
sharing of information between business partners,
    effectively building trading relationships.

19
How is GS1 involved in EDI?
  • Computer communications and applications used
between trading partners need a common language
in order to understand each other, this common
language is to be found in EDI messages standards
and most notably in UN/EDIFACT (United Nations
    Electronic Data Interchange for Administration,
Commerce and Transport), the International EDI
    message standards and in UN/EDIFACT
    implementation guides such as EANCOM.
  • GS1 Global Office is closely involved as a
participant in global EDI standards committees on
web based XML EDI, ECR (Efficient Consumer
    Response) etc.
  • GS1 is an active constituent of the 'EDI COUNCIL'
which operates under the Government of India and
assists in standardisation of messaging standards
through use of 'EANCOM' message subset of
UN/EDIFACT for different industry segments. GS1
promotes adoption of EDI use of GS1 numbering
in EDI. GS1 is also involved in facilitating
creation of ECR forum in the country which would
also use EDI for business transaction
    communication.

20
What is ECR?
  • ECR is about, "Working together to fulfill
consumer wishes better, faster and at less cost"
  • Focus on Consumers A commitment to the belief
that sustained business success stems only from
providing consumers with products and services
that consistently meet or surpass their demands
    and expectations
  • Working together Recognition that the greatest
consumer value can be offered only when
organisations work together, work internally and
with their trading partners, to overcome barriers
    that erode efficiency and effectiveness.

21
How is GS1 connected with ECR?
  • GS1 Global Office and its Numbering organisations
across the world closely involved in projects on
rollout of ECR and participate actively as part
of ECR boards in Europe, Asia etc. They
facilitate creation of regional and global ECR
forums and assist in rollout of pilot projects
which lead in turn to adoption by industry
    segments

22
Does GS1 numbering help in ERP implementation ?
  • Yes, ERP packages can be integrated to accept GS1
    numbers for product identification through
automatic data capture in retail, trade
    logistics level modules.

23
How can GS1 numbering facilitate track trace?
  • GS1 numbering system allows you to encode
additional information such as batch number,
    manufacturing date, expiry date, quantity,
    consignor, consignee, etc. This information,
encoded on the product packaging at point of
    manufacture facilitates track trace right
across the supply chain up to the point of sale.

24
How can I use bar code labels inside my company?
  • You can scan all package labels of finished goods
for exact inventory control. In addition, you can
scan packaged raw material that go into a
specific work order, at all levels of packaging
for exact order composition control, and thus be
able to trace products throughout the supply
chain to meet regulatory mandates, on quality
    controls etc.

25
What is a check digit?
  • A check digit is the last digit in an GS1
article/ location number which enables checking
accuracy of its preceding digits to ensure
accuracy and scannability. It is calculated as
per the algorithms provided in the Implementation
guide circulated to all subscribers on enrollment.

26
Why is GS1 numbering required and how would it
help my organisation?
  • GS1 is the global language of business and is a
set of tools that provide a standard way to
identify, track and trace products, services and
    locations and facilitate Electronic Commerce
    processes.
  • The unique advantage that a GS1 subscriber gains
by using the GS1 system is that, his products are
article numbered and bar coded as per GS1 rules
and can be uniquely identified in any other
country using bar code scanners. In fact, major
retailers and manufacturers do not purchase
products that are not identified by GS1 numbers
    and bar codes.
  • The GS1 system can be used in any business and
its wide range of applications provide trade and
industry with a powerful tool to build higher
    efficiency, productivity cost -
competitiveness, so essential in today's dynamic
    market place.
  • This system is used with bar codes (a series of
bars and spaces) printed or labeled on a product
package and enables automatic data capture
through bar code scanners. When linked to a
computer running in-house applications like ERP,
this system can be used to closely monitor
    product inventory, its distribution, generate
    automated billing/packing lists, forecast sales
based on actual consumption and track/ trace the
product right across the supply chain.
  • GS1 system will help your organisation by
    enabling product identification universally
    uniquely since
  • the GS1 system is recognised at all points in the
supply chain from the handling of raw materials,
    to the customer checkout.
  • allows automated collection of valuable
information such as sales volumes and item
    location.
  • supports automated stock control systems which
    reduce scope for human error.
  • is the basis for electronic trading systems such
    as electronic data interchange (EDI).
  • is a stable, world-wide system with an expanding
    range of users.

27
We use our internal product codes. Why should we
change over to GS1 ?
  • Internal product codes can be understood and
accepted only internally within a company. If the
products move out in a supply chain from point of
manufacture to the point of sale, the
codification structure has to be standardised to
be understood by all partners in the chain
    comprising CF aparts distributors, dealers
retailers. GS1 is the common language globally
used by companies for identification of their
products and services uniquely and universally
