4
Colonial Takeover in Asia
  • Imperialism also affected Asia
  • By 1900, the entire area was under Western rule
  • The process began with the British
  • The British established a colony called
    Singapore
  • Due to its location, Singapore became a stopping
point for ships traveling to and from China
  • The British also established a colony in Burma

5
Colonial Takeover in Asia
  • The British advance in Asia worried the French
  • France forced Vietnam to become a protectorate
  • In the 1880s France extended its control over
    other nations in the areas
  • Frances possessions were united into French
    Indochina

6
Colonial Takeover in Asia
  • After the conquest of Indochina, only Siam
    remained independent
  • British and French ambitions threatened to place
    Siam under colonial rule
  • In 1896, Britain and France agreed to allow Siam
    to remain independent, buffer state

7
Colonial Takeover in Asia
  • The final conquest of Southeast Asia occurred at
the end of the nineteenth century
  • During the Spanish-American War, US forces under
Commodore George Dewey defeated the Spanish in
    the Battle of Manila Bay
  • The US decided to make the Philippines a colony
  • The islands gave the US a jumping-off point to
    trade with China

8
Colonial Takeover in Asia
  • President McKinley thought it was his moral
    obligation to civilize the world
  • The Filipinos did not agree and began to organize
    independence movements
  • US forces quickly defeated the rebels and secured
    the Philippines for the US

9
Colonial Regimes
  • Western powers chief goal was to exploit the
natural resources and open new markets in their
    colonies
  • To justify their actions, they often said they
were bringing the benefits of Western
    civilization to their colonial subjects

10
Colonial Regimes
  • Sometimes, Western powers cooperated with local
    rulers
  • In these cases, indirect rule was utilized
  • Under indirect rule, local rulers kept their
    power in a colonial setting
  • Indirect rule allowed the Western powers to keep
the cost of governing the colonies down
  • Indirect rule also had less of an impact on the
    local culture

11
Colonial Regimes
  • Officials of the Dutch East India Co. allowed
local aristocrats to control local government
  • These local rulers maintained law and order as
    well as collected taxes
  • In return, they received a small wage from the
    Dutch East India Co.

12
Colonial Regimes
  • Indirect rule was not always possible, especially
in areas where locals resisted foreign control
  • In such cases, local rulers were removed
  • Western nations used direct rule to maintain
    their colonies
  • Under direct rule, local rulers were removed and
replaced with officials from the mother country

13
Colonial Regimes
  • Britain used direct rule in Burma
  • The French also used it in their colonies in
    French Indochina
  • Many Western nations spoke of introducing
capitalism and democracy to their people
  • However, many people feared allowing the natives
    political rights

14
Colonial Regimes
  • Colonial policy stressed the export of raw
    materials from the colonies
  • In many cases, this led to plantation
    agriculture
  • Peasants worked as wage laborers on plantations
    owned by foreign investors

15
Colonial Regimes
  • Plantation owners kept wages at poverty levels to
    increase their profits
  • Conditions were often so unhealthy on the
    plantations that thousands died
  • In addition, high taxes to pay for colonial
governments were a burden to the peasants

16
Colonial Regimes
  • Colonial rule did bring some benefit to Asia
  • Modern economic systems began to emerge
  • Colonial governments built railroads and highways

17
Resistance to Colonial Rule
  • Many people in Asia were unhappy at being
    governed by Western powers
  • At first, resistance came from the existing
    ruling class
  • Other times, revolts were in the form of peasant
    revolts

18
Resistance to Colonial Rule
  • Peasants often lost their land to plantations
    owners
  • Many times, Europeans had to put down peasant
    revolts
  • Early resistance movements failed, but a new form
of resistance emerged in the twentieth century

19
Resistance to Colonial Rule
  • The new resistance took the form of nationalism
  • Many intellectuals first tried to defend the
economic interests and religious beliefs of the
    natives
  • By the 1930s, the resistance movements began to
    demand national independence

20
