37Career ? Career and Academic
- Important to look at entire picture are
students taking courses that will help them reach
their career goals, both academic and technical - SREB research shows that simply encouraging
students to take higher level math and science
makes a difference in achievement level - Adults technical skills always important, but
academic skill attainment important as well need
to help them identify their next steps, academic
and technical - Individual plan of study
- Accustomed not to mess with what students were
taking at home high school - Not worry with adults academic future or needs -
just focus on technical skills - Career plan
38 Whose Job is it anyway? Once ? Now
- Student Services should serve in the leadership
role for quality academic and career guidance/
advisement - However, collaboration is the key with all
partners both inside the tech center and with
partnering entities
- Counselor has sole responsibility for career
guidance and advisement with the students.
39Starting early..
- Middle school is not too early to work jointly
with partner schools to begin career awareness
and exploration activities, with a tentative plan
of study developed by the end of 8th or 9th
grade. - Hard part moving that plan of study through the
pipeline and having it for 10-11-12 grade
- Sophomore tours are the start of career
development for career and technology students.
40Transition Support
- Have always been concerned about moving students
to employment also have to now look at what
support we are providing to move students through
educational levels - middle school to high school
- high school to tech center
- tech center to postsecondary
41Data Driven Decisions
- How do we know in student services that what we
are doing is making a difference? - From a student services perspective, are we
looking at our TCs completion, retention
placement rate, our college remediation rates,
CRC levels, industry credential numbers? - From a student services perspective, are we
looking at our partner schools report cards, EOI
scores,drop out rates?
42Parental Involvement
- How can student services get parents more
involved with students career and academic
planning? - help them help their kids with their futures .
- mapping out plan of study
- feedback on student achievements
- showing where the student is strong and how we
enhance that showing where the student has
challenges and how we can meet those
43Guidance-easy connections.
- You can recruit more or different students for
particular career clusters, career pathways and
majors. - Identify academic achievement or non-achievement
for better advisement strategies for
schools/students.
44More connections
- Customize the careertech experience for the
student with targeted academic as well as career
interventions - Identify students who meet PLAN requirement for
Alliance - Work with such students on transitional support
for college success - ACT Prep, making sure ACT is taken, enrollment
assistance, etc.
45Harder Use new data in conjunction with other
data sources such as
- NEW Plan info (contact info, race, achievement
score band, career interest) - NEW ACT student report (if TC is chosen as
selection) - College remediation rates
- Performance measures
- Student surveys
- Perkins data
