What is Diabetes?

• It is a condition in which high blood glucose
  levels are caused by a total lack of insulin.
• It is usually diagnosed in young individuals and
  they will have it the rest of their lives.

What happens in the body?

• When we eat we ingest glucose which is a type of
  sugar that will circulate in the blood
• Insulin, a hormone, helps get glucose into our
  cells where it can be used as fuel.

• People with type 1, however, do not produce that
  insulin so the body cant get the fuel to the
  cells so the level of glucose in the blood
  becomes to high.

Diabetics must regulate blood sugar levels.

• If the blood sugar becomes to low (hypoglycemia)
  the body starts to burn fat for energy this
  produces waste products called ketones.
• When ketones are found in high levels it can
  cause

• Dehydration
• Dry lips
• Sunken eyes
• Labored breathing
• Vomiting
• Drowsiness
• Extreme thirst
• If no medical attention was seeked then the
  person may go into a coma and die.

Symptoms

• Being very thirsty
• Going to the bathroom
• Excessive hunger or being very tired
• Losing weight without trying
• Having sores that heal slowly
• Having dry,itchy skin
• Losing the feeling in your feet or having
  tingling in your feet
• Having blurry eyesight

How is it treated?

• Insulin injections
• Healthy eating
• Exercise
