What is Battle of the Books?

• Reading motivation program

• Goals are to encourage reading for pleasure, to
  broaden reading interest, and to recognize
  students who enjoy reading

• Titles are chosen annually by the NJLA according
  to criteria for the different grade levels

How it works

• LMS (Library Media Specialist) collaborates with
  the English/ Reading teachers to put students
  into groups

• These teams read the books over a period of
  months, discuss them, quiz each other on the
  content, and then compete to correctly answer
  questions based upon the books read.

• The questions used all begin with In what
  book.. and answers will always be a title and
  author

• This is a state-wide program which involves a
  cooperative effort by many individuals and local
  groups

• It is very popular with students has provided
  new opportunities for academic competition

• It has also been proven to stimulate an interest
  in reading

• Numerous surrounding districts would like to
  compete against us

• To develop social and academic skills

• Encourage competition, teamwork, and fun among
  classes, grade levels and other districts

• Connects to the New Jersey Literature Core
  Curriculum Standards

• Connects to our community by forming a
  relationship with the public library as they may
  give us access to their e-books online as well as
  their Battle Book collection
