Some(any)one, some(any)body, some(any)thing
  • The words someone, something, somewhere, anyone,
anything and anywhere work in the same way as
    some and any
  • I just need to go and talk to someone about
something. Ill be back in a minute.
  • A Do you want me to put your coat and bag
    somewhere?
  • B Oh, thanks. Thats great.

5
Any
  • When we talk about what we like and dont like we
can use any in positive sentences to mean it
    doesnt matter which one.
  • A Which one do you want?
  • B Any of them will be fine. They all look OK.

6
Any
  • Any is a determiner which generally suggests an
indefinite amount or number and it is used when
it is not important to say how much/how many we
are thinking of. Beacuse of its non specific
meaning, it is often used in questions and
negative clauses and in other cases where there
is an idea of doubt or negation.

7
Any
  • We also use any in positive sentences after the
    word if
  • If there are any phone calls for me, could you
    say Im out?
  • If you need any help, just ask me, OK?

8
Any
  • We use any in positive sentences when the meaning
    is negative
  • E.g.
  • She went out without any money
  • He refused to eat anything
  • Hardly anybody passed the examination

9
Any
  • Any comparative
  • E.g.
  • Can you go any faster?
  • You dont look any older than your daughter

10
Some in questions
  • We often use some in questions
  • that are offers or requests.
  • A Could you lend me some money? Just until
    payday.
  • B Yes, sure. How much do you need?
  • When we talk about a person/thing that we know or
    think exists
  • Ad 2 Treat yourself

11
(a) Little / (a) few
  • I have little interest in politics
  • Weve got a little bacon
  • Uncountable singular nouns
  • Few of us like cabbage soup.
  • Only a few children like maths
  • Countable plural nouns

Without a they usually have rather negative
meaning (not much)
12
  • (1)Some/any recipes in the book are quick and
easy. But its an insult to peoples intelligence
to suggest they should never do
(2)something/anything which takes more than (3)a
    little/ a few minutes. (4)Some/any recipes are
long, slow and economical. (5)Some/any require
(6)little/a little skill but (7)some/any patience
    like sourdough bread. (8)Most/much have
ingredients which are easily available. Only (9)a
few/few have unusual spices such as the Thai
kaffir lime leaves or the Indonesian shrimp paste
and (10)some /any cook will know how to adapt
the recipes. But beware, (11)some/any cooks
believe that if (12)a few/a little oil does you
good, then (13)a lot/much must be better. If only
    this was true!
