5What does it all mean?
Hormones internal secretions triggered by the
brain, which pass into the blood to stimulate
organs into action. Puberty the stage at which a
child develops into an adult. Body changes at
this time enable reproduction. Testosterone
male hormone produced in the testicles.
Oestrogen female hormone produced by the
ovaries. Menstruation loss of blood from the
womb for a period of a few days. Likely to
follow an average cycle of 28 days. Body odour
usually stale (perspiration) sweat. Whilst
everyone sweats, body odour occurs when it
becomes stale. Personal hygiene habit of
keeping clean for example, regular
bathing/showering, wearing clean clothes and
washing hands after going to the toilet and
before eating. Sebaceous glands glands that
secrete oil onto the skin. Bacteria small
organisms that reproduce quickly and often spread
disease.

- Most changes at puberty are caused by chemicals
in the body called hormones for boys - it is testosterone for girls it is oestrogen
-theyve got a lot to answer for! -
- Boys will have hair sprouting all over the place,
greasy skin and hair and a deeper voice- - perhaps even over night!
- Girls will start your periods (menstruation) and
develop breasts. - Ignore anyone who might make remarks, these are
the differences between the sexes and - are all part of your attraction.
- On average a teenage boy will grow 30cm taller
during puberty - Girls today are having their first periods five
years younger (at about 12 years) than girls in
the 19th century - Teens really do need more sleep than adults, all
this growing and changing means you need you need
a good nights sleep at least 8 hours!

- For girls, puberty can last for around 5 years
and usually starts between the - ages of 9 and 13 years.
- You can expect
- Your breasts to grow
- Your body to grow taller and more curvy
- To grow hair in the pubic area between your legs,
under your arms and on your legs - To sweat more and for your sweat to have a
stronger smell - Your skin and hair to become more oily
- To develop more spots
- Your periods to start.
8Guys
- For boys, puberty can last for between 3 and 5
years and usually starts between - the ages of 10 and 14 years.
- You can expect
- To grow body hair, around your pubic region,
under your arms and on your legs, then eventually
of your face and sometimes your chest - To grow taller and more muscular
- Your penis and testicles become bigger for sperm
to be produced - Your voice to break" and become deeper
- To sweat more and for your sweat to have a
stronger smell - Your skin and hair to become more oily
- To develop more spots, particularly on your face
but sometimes your back too.

- As well as physical changes, you may find that
you experience emotional - changes too, possibly
- Feeling less confident
- Arguing more, particularly with your parents and
family - Wanting to spend more time on your own
- Experiencing mood swings
- Dont worry if you think that you are changing
faster or more slowly than your - mates - everyone is different and you will catch
up with them or they will soon - catch up with you!

- Keep it clean - prevention is better than cure
- If spots come from blocked pores and nasty
bacteria, you need to - Unclog pores
- Remove dirt and oil
- Fight bacteria Prevention
- Dont be tempted to over wash or scrub, over
washing can make things worse by drying the skin
out too much. If the skin gets too dry it will
produce more oil a vicious circle! - Dont squeeze! Squeezing spots can spread oil and
bacteria, as well as lead to scars. It can also
make the area red, angry and a lot harder to
cover up. - Drink up - drink plenty of water and choose
vitamin-rich foods, and your skin will definitely
thank you for it. - Cover up make sure your face is clean, dab on a
fast acting treatment to dry out the spot and
lightly tap on concealer
