Title: Voice Recognition Software

1
Voice Recognition Software
  • Todd Whitlock Amy Graber

2
Why use Voice?
  • Over 80 of the people in most countries are
limited in their participation with computers by
the QWERTY keyboard and the mouse. A speech
interface will open computers up to everyone . 1

3
Voice Recognition should increase personal
productivity by doing the following
  • Leveling the playing field 110-140 WPM 95 and
better accuracy in under 12 hours
  • Better than 3-4 semesters of keyboarding
    instruction (360 hours)
  • Easier to maintain over time

4
How to use voice recognition
  • Train speech recognition
  • Use a high-quality microphone/headset
  • Eliminate background noise
  • Speak in a consistent, level tone. Speaking too
loud or soft makes it difficult for the computer
    to recognize.
  • When dictating, speak without pausing between
each word a phrase is easier for the computer to
    interpret than just a word.

5
Improve Writing/Communication Skills
  • Voice Recognition should improve writing and
communication skills by putting less of a
priority on keyboarding and more of an emphasis
back on the use of language, simulations, and
    technical communication.2

6
Carpal tunnel syndrome results in the highest
number of days lost among all work related
injuries. Almost half of the carpal tunnel cases
result in 31 days or more of work loss. 3
Keyboarding Injuries

7
Are your children at risk? Millions are.
Currently 21 million Americans suffer from some
form of repetitive stress injury (RSI) including
carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). What is especially
troubling to health officials, however, is the
ever-increasing injuries among children and
teens. 4

We all can help our students, colleagues, family,
and friends by joining the Wrist Rescue and
Recovery program by locating those people who are
at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive
stress injury and tell/teach them to use speech
recognition software. To help end the epidemic of
keyboard and mouse related injuries by adopting
these five goals.
  • Reduce keystrokes and mouse clicks among healthy
computer users by 50 in 5 years while improving
    their overall productivity.
  • Reduce keystrokes and mouse clicks among RSI and
CTS sufferers by 95 in 5 years while improving
    their productivity.
  • Encourage continuous speech recognition (CSR)
instruction into every K-12 school and college by
    2005.
  • Assist corporate Human Resource departments as
they implement much needed CSR training
    on-the-job.
