Title: Partition of Africa, 18801914
1 Partition of Africa, 18801914
- Before 1880, the European presence in Africa was
largely the result of coastal exploration by
early imperialists and did not penetrate the
heart of the continent. By 1914, the occupying
powers included most large European states, and
only Liberia and Abyssinia remained independent.
2 Asia, 18801914
- As in Africa, the decades before World War I saw
imperialism spread widely and rapidly in Asia.
Two new powers, Japan and the United States,
joined the British, French, and Dutch in
exploiting an enfeebled China.
3Western warehouses, Canton harbor
Trade with Europe was carefully regulated by the
Chinese imperial government, the Manchu Dynasty.
It required all foreign merchants to live in the
southern city of Canton and to buy and sell only
to the local merchant monopoly. For years the
little community of foreign merchants in Canton
had to accept the Chinese system. Here we see
Western warehouses and offices, with their
respective flags flying, in Canton Harbor in the
nineteenth century.
4Filipino Guerillas
- Filipinos who fought against American control
used brutal guerilla tactics that denied American
victory for three years and led to severe
retaliatory acts by American troops.
5All infused with a prevailing sense of racial and
cultural superiority of whites over all others
supported by their technological superiority
religion.
6The problems of de-colonization
- Religion
- Slavery
- Social conflict based on race
- Terrible economies
- Lack of political experience
