3Pictorial Dosing Guide
- Create a customized daily dosing card of a
patients daily drug regimen, using instructional
images that are easy to understand and relevant
to the target population. - Area 1 - Gulfton Area of Houston Comprehension
of medical treatment plan is a major concern with
a predominantly Hispanic and immigrant
population. - Area 2 Botswana- HIV/AIDS Drug regimens are
often complex and demanding making adherence to
drug treatment a challenge.
4Pictorial Dosing Guide
- Overall Goals
- Affordable and appropriate pictorial guide that
will provide details of medicine dosing regimen
to patients
- Providing the guide to the patient should not
interfere with the doctors work pattern or
patient flow
- Guide should be easy for the doctor to customize
- Medications that are appropriate for the target
environment should be included in the guide
5Micro-Enterprise Training Program
- Research and design a micro-enterprise training
program to be implemented at Masianokeng High
School, Maseru, Lesotho
- Problem
- Young persons pursuing education
- and employment in extremely
- impoverished communities are limited
- by difficulties in access to educational
- and livelihood opportunities.
6Micro-Enterprise Training Program
- Overall Goals
- Create a micro-enterprise training program to
enable high school aged students to start a
successful business selling Sun Night Solar
lights - Program should provide jobs and income to
maintain and enhance educational and health
initiatives
- Develop basic management and financial skills
7Developing World H.S. Health Technology
Activities
- Create kits of materials for educational
activities on health and technology topics
targeting high school students.
- Area 1 Machabeng IB Program School, Maseru,
Lesotho
- Area 2 - Masianokeng High School, Maseru,
Lesotho
- Problem
- Lesotho is one of the many sub-Saharan African
countries impacted by HIV/AIDS pandemic affecting
all ages, genders and socio-economic levels.
Educating High school students on locally
relevant health issues can enable them to
effectively respond to the challenges of HIV/AIDS
in their country.
8Developing World H.S. Health Technology
Activities
- Overall Goals
- Create kits of interactive activities for high
school students that promote understanding of and
interest in science and health with a focus on
locally relevant topics (HIV/AIDS, disease
transmission, human biology) - Gender and cultural issues should be considered
in activity development
- Materials must be available and affordable locally
9Measuring Medication Adherence
- Create a method for pharmacist to accurately
measure a patients adherence to their treatment
program by measuring amount of medication used
between clinic visits. - Problem
- The BIPAI Lesotho COE serves the healthcare needs
of the pediatric HIV/AIDS population in Maseru.
- Adherence to the HIV/AIDS treatment plan is vital
to the effectiveness of the treatment to avoid
building resistance to the drug treatment
- Clinic pharmacist/staff spends a lot of time
manually counting or measuring medications to
determine patient adherence
10Measuring Medication Adherence
- Overall Goals
- Create a device that can measure easily and
quickly both liquid and pill medications
- Device should be inexpensive, dependable, and
portable
- If system uses software, it must be Excel or
other Microsoft Office based software.
11Medical Diagnostic Lab in a Backpack
- Create a customized lab in a backpack for
clients working in developing countries
(Sub-Saharan Africa, Haiti, Guatemala).
- A prototype was designed by a BIOE451
- senior design team in 2006-07.
- Problem
- A large percentage of patients needing
- medical treatment live in rural areas and are
- unable to reach a medical clinic. Doctors
- sometimes need to travel to remote areas
- to see and treat patients.
12Medical Diagnostic Lab in a Backpack
- Overall Goals
- To survey doctors
- Create list of items needed
- Help assemble and customize new backpacks
-
- The custom backpacks should fully meet each
locations specific needs while maintaining the
criteria of small size, portability, low cost and
low power consumption.
13Health/Science Educational Materials for Primary
School Students and their Parents
- Basic health/science education is particularly
important to communities with limited or unsafe
water resources
- The project will create two kits of materials for
health science educational activities and related
science topics appropriate for the local Haitian
community one targeted at elementary students
and a complementary kit for the childrens
parents - Project team will collaborate with a French
primary school in Houston
14Health/Science Educational Materials for Primary
School Students and their Parents
- Overall Goals
- - Kits contain at least 4 interactive activities
with the aim of expanding understanding
- of basic health related topics and
- promotes an interest in science
- and engineering.
- - Materials should be inexpensive
- and available locally.
