2Friendly Letter format
- Letters can be friendly or formal. A friendly
letter is a little like a long-distance
conversation in writing. You can share your
thoughts and feelings, some exciting news, or
whats been happening in your life. E-mail
messages are usually friendly, but can be formal,
depending on the purpose and audience.

41. The Heading
- The heading of a friendly letter should contain
the return address (usually two lines) followed
by a third line with the date. - In a friendly letter the heading is always
indented to the middle of the page. - Example

52. The Greeting/Salutation
- The greeting (also known as salutation) in a
friendly letter capitalizes the first word and
any noun. It always ends with a comma, though it
might be all right to end with an exclamation
point when writing to someone special. - Example

- The body is where you write the content of the
letter the paragraphs should be single spaced
with a skipped line between each paragraph.

- Let's the reader know that you are finished with
your letter usually ends with Sincerely,
Sincerely yours, Thank you, and so on. Note that
there is a comma after the end of the closing and
only the first word in the closing is
capitalized. - Example

85. Signature
- Your signature will go in this section, usually
signed in black or blue ink with a pen. After
your written signature you will skip a line or
two and type or print your name under the written
signature.
9P.S.
- If you want to add anything additional to the
letter you write a P.S. (post script) and the
message after that. You can also add a P.P.S
after that and a P.P.P.S. after that and so on. - Example
- P.S. youre the best Mr. S.
- P.P.S. Mr. S. is the best.
- P.P.P.S. No one is better than you Mr. S.
10Formal Letter format
- People write formal letters to a business or
organization for different purposes, such as
requesting information, giving an opinion,
seeking employment, making a complaint, placing
an order, joining a club or group, making a
recommendation, or requesting than an action be
taken by the business or organization. You might
write a formal letter to a magazine or a
newspaper, such as a letter to an editor to
express an opinion or reaction to a particular
article, or a letter to a columnist asking for
advice. Formal letters use language in a
particular way, and follow a specific format.
The language should be polite and natural, but
not chatty like a friendly letter you might
write to a relative or friend.
11Formal structure
- Salutation usually begins with Dear and is
always followed by the persons full name and a
colon. - Body of the letter clearly and concisely states
the purpose of the letter, provides sufficient
information, and summarizes your request or
opinion. - Closing usually contains sincerely, yours
sincerely, yours truly and the writers full
signature. - Always use formal language. No slang. You know
