Title: The Business Problems
1AMDBusiness, Operational and Financial (BOF)
Impact Case Study
- The Business Problems
- AMD wanted to change over all of their internal
systems to servers running on AMD processors. - This project was known corporate-wide as AMD on
AMD. - As part of this strategy, AMD decided to
consolidate server hardware using VMware ESX
Server and the associated ESX Server management
technologies - The major goal of the project was to migrate off
servers with Intel processors and, where
appropriate, to virtualize the physical servers
to obtain better hardware efficiency,
manageability, recovery, and disaster recovery
capabilities - GlassHouse Solution Server Virtualization
Project - A team was created with 12 resources from various
departments within AMD and this team participated
in the GlassHouse Accelerate process - The outcome of this work was a design and
deployment plan for the introduction of
virtualization within AMD core datacenters - The virtualization design developed by AMDs IT
team was designed to meet the following main
objectives - The team designed a scalable and manageable
solution based on VMware ESX Server, VMware
VirtualCenter, and HP Proliant DL585
SAN-connected servers

Business Impact The design provides adequate
performance, supports existing critical processes
and with no change in application stability AMD
now has a scalable infrastructure
Operational Impact Eliminated Intel-based servers
from datacenter Eliminated end-of-life
servers The infrastructure is easy to manage,
secure and accommodates a variety of storage
technologies
