This is my library A personal tour in print
  • The purpose of this book is to help pre-teach
what the structure and routine of a library
experience will be like. With this book,
individuals will gain a visual familiarity of
their own library so that they can feel
comfortable during their visits, be able to use
    the services, and interact appropriately.
  • This project was made possible by a contract with
INFOLINK The Eastern New Jersey Regional Library
Cooperative. The Cooperative and its services are
funded by the New Jersey State Library, which is
responsible for the coordination, promotion and
funding of the New Jersey Library Network.

This is the front door to the South Brunswick
Public Library
This is my library, The South Brunswick Public
Library.  We come to the library for information,
entertainment and special events.  Here I will
find books, movies, and music to take home and
enjoy, information for research, and programs and
services in which I can participate.

My library has rules
I need to pay attention to the librarys rules.
The rules tell me how I should behave in the
library.  The rules help me to be considerate of
other peoples needs.  One rule asks me to walk,
not run and another rule asks me to use my indoor
voice.

This is the friendly Childrens staff at my
library
The Childrens staff members plan library
programs and develop the book, movie and music
collection for the Childrens Department.  They
are able to help me if I have problems using the
library.  They can teach me how to find books and
information and use the resources that are here
for me.

6
This is how I know who works at my library
This badge identifies someone who works in my
library.  If I need help I should ask someone for
help who is wearing a badge like this one. They
can help me find the books or services I am
looking for.
6
7
These are the times I can use my library
There are specific days and times I can use my
library.  Ask a staff member for a copy of the
library schedule.
7
8
This is where I might find a book I want
My library is separated into sections. There are
books and information in different areas and
different topics for children, teens and adults.
My library staff can help me find the location of
the item I am looking for.
8
9
This is how I find a book at my library
I can look for books, movies, and music in my
librarys computerized catalog.  I can search by
title, author, keyword, or subject.  I can do
this on a computer in the library or on a
computer from home.
9
10
This is what a library card looks like
This is what my library card looks like.  Having
a library card lets me checkout things like
books, movies, and music.  There are rules about
getting and using a library card.  A staff member
can tell me more about getting a library card and
how to use it.
10
11
This is the Check-Out Desk at my library
The Check-Out desk is the place I can use my
library card to borrow or renew books and other
items from the library. My library has rules
about which items can be borrowed and when to
return them to the library.  My library also has
rules about how I should care for the items I
borrow while I have them.
11
12
This is how I can borrow books from my library
To borrow books and other library materials, I
need to give my library card and items I have
chosen to the person at the Check-Out Desk.  The
staff person will scan the items into the
computer and then return the items to me and tell
me when I need to return them to the library. I
can also use the Self Check-Out machine to borrow
books.
12
13
This is how I return a borrowed library item
This is a drop box.  It is where items I have
borrowed from the library can be returned.  I
just pull the handle towards me to open and then
gently drop the items I had borrowed in and then
gently close.  The items I had borrowed are now
returned.  My library has drop boxes inside as I
enter and outside the library building. I need to
return the items I borrow by the due date on my
receipt. A staff member will give me a receipt
with the due date for each item I borrow at the
Check-Out desk.
13
14
This is the Information Desk at my library
My library also has an Information Desk.  I can
go here to ask questions of the reference
librarian.  The reference librarian and the
reference books can help me to answer questions I
have and to do research.  The reference librarian
can also help me to find the location of the
items I need.
14
15
I can print information at my library
There are several printers around the library.  I
have to pay 10 cents for each print I make. After
I print out the pages I want, I need to go to the
Check-Out desk or the Information Desk and pay
for the pages I have printed.  I can ask a
library staff member if I need help.
15
16
I can make photocopies at my library
There is one photocopier. It is located next to
the Check-Out desk.  I have to pay 10 cents for
each copy or print I make. I insert the dime into
the machine where indicated before I can make my
copy. I can ask a library staff member if I need
help.
16
17
This is a quiet place to read or study
There are places in my library I can go to do my
work quietly.  My librarian can help me find
them.  I should always be respectful of others
who are reading or studying quietly so I do not
disturb them.
17
18
This is where I can quietly work on the computer
At my library there are places where I can work
quietly on the computer. I can play games or do
research or work with my family on the computer.
If I have a problem with my computer I can ask a
staff member for help.  If I need to use
headphones I can ask to borrow them from a
librarian at the Information Desk.
18
19
These are the bathrooms in my library
A staff member can help me to find where the
bathroom is located.  The bathroom is there for
me to use if I need to.  It is inappropriate to
use the bathroom for other activities than my
personal care and hand washing.  I should let a
library staff  member know if I have special
needs.  I should always respect a persons
privacy in the bathroom.
19
20
I can reach my library over the phone or
through the website
