  • Define a mission
  • Define goals
  • Develop SMART Objectives
  • Define actions and responsibilities
  • Evaluate
  • Good planning makes a good Coalition.
  • Good Coalitions keep good members!!

15
A Few Words about SMART Objectives

  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Time-bound

16
Are Your SMART Objectives REALLY SMART?
  • SMART Objective Litmus Test
  • Does the objective reflect specific, desired
    accomplishments?
  • Can progress toward completion of an objective be
    measured?
  • Is the objective attainable and realistic given
    planning period and resources?
  • Does the objective specify a realistic result,
    rather than an activity?
  • Is there a specific time frame for the completion
    of the objective?
  • Will completion of the objectives lead to goal
    attainment?
  • Is there at least one objective for each goal
    stated?
  • Is the objective supported by data and theory?
  • Would someone unfamiliar with the Coalition
    understand what the objective means?
  • Have you identified who will be accountable for
    meeting the objective?
  • PLEASE REFER TO HANDOUT IN PACKET

17
Strategic Planning or a Root Canal?
  • Lessons learned from Strategic Planning
  • Coalition members need to know that their
participation will lead to meaningful action.
  • Leaders of the planning process need to know what
    the END goals should be.
  • The more Coalition members involved, the greater
the commitment to the final product.
  • Coalition members need to see the Strategic Plan
being used and UPDATED to know it is meaningful.

18
Taking it to the Streets
  • How to get the word out about what the Coalition
    is doing
  • Meet regularly with advocates/supporters of the
Coalition (what you are doing, what results you
are achieving, what it means in terms of lives
    saved, resources saved, etc.)
  • Call to Actions
  • Create earned media opportunities
  • Send decision makers copies of earned media
    regarding the Coalitions efforts
  • Send all Coalition members copies of earned media
    regarding the Coalitions efforts
  • Include advocates to Tidbit distribution list
