• The Fundamentals of the Life and Ministry of
  Jesus Christ

Introduction

• There are many areas where good men may
  disagree, but upon the issues which will be
  covered in this sermon, there is little room for
  disagreement. These are called foundational or
  fundamental issues. It is helpful to show how
  truly interdependent these fundamental doctrines
  are. We will attempt to show the interdependence
  of fundamental doctrine in tonights message.

The Popsicle Stick Window Panes

• Tonight we will use the popsicle sticks as a
  means to show the interdependence of foundational
  doctrine.

• The reason why the popsicle stick structure is
  such a good analogy for explaining doctrinal
  interdependence is that the structures integrity
  depends on all the pieces being in place. If one
  stick within the structure is removed, the whole
  structure falls apart.

Likewise, the doctrine(s) we will cover tonight
are interdependent. It then becomes critical that
you and I be ready always to give an answer to
every man that asketh you a reason of the hope
that is in you with meekness and fear (I Peter
315b)

I. His Virgin Birth

The Virgin Birth was a direct fulfillment of Old
Testament prophecy.
Isaiah 714 Therefore the Lord himself shall
give you a sign Behold, a virgin shall conceive,
and bear a son, and shall call his name
Immanuel. Luke 131, 34 31 And, behold, thou
shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a
son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 34  Then said
Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I
know not a man?

• If this prophecy is false or unfulfilled, then
  the Virgin Birth is a falsehood!

Why is it so critical to believe in the virgin
birth?

The Virgin Birth is the key component of the
sinless nature of Jesus Christ.
Why?

1) Sin is inherited from the male.

• Romans 512
• Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into
• the world, and death by sin and so death
• passed upon all men, for that all have
• sinned

2) The eyes of Adam and Eve were not opened
until Adam ate the fruit of knowledge. This shows
Adams responsibility for sins curse.

• Genesis 36-7
• 6  And when the woman saw that the tree was good
  for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes,
  and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she
  took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave
  also unto her husband with her and he did eat. 7
   And the eyes of them both were opened, and they
  knew that they were naked and they sewed fig
  leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

3) Due to Adams sin, an earthly father would
have transmitted the sin trait to Jesus Christ.
In order to be sinless, Jesus Christ had to have
a perfect Father.

• Matthew 120
• But while he thought on these things, behold, the
• angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream,
• saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to
  take
• unto thee Mary thy wife for that which is
• conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

If a sacrifice had a blemish, it was rejected

Thus, Christ had to live a sinless life in order
for His sacrifice for us to be pure.

• We know He was sinless because

1) John the Baptist called Jesus the Lamb of God

• John 129
• The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto
• him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which
• taketh away the sin of the world.

2) Jesus was Gods provided Lamb

• Gen. 22 is a beautiful Old Testament
• foreshadowing of Christs substitution.
• Abraham had said God would provide
• himself a lamb.

3) Jesus was certified pure by John the Baptist

• John 129 The next day John seeth Jesus
• coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of
• God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

4) Peter declared Jesus was without spot or
blemish

• 1 Peter 118-19
• 18  Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not
  redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and
  gold, from your vain conversation received by
  tradition from your fathers 19 But with the
  precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without
  blemish and without spot
• 1 Peter 2 21-22
• 21  For even hereunto were ye called because
  Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an
  example, that ye should follow his steps 22  Who
  did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth

5) Most importantly, He was declared to be a
pleasing sacrifice by His Father

• Matthew 317
• And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my
• beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Gods statement comes when Jesus is baptized. His
baptism occurred immediately after John declared
that Jesus Christ was the Lamb of God. Thus,
while Jesus is still wet from being immersed, God
confirms what John has said about Christ being
the Lamb of God.

6) As we studied earlier, the virgin birth
enabled Christ to choose to live sinlessly. Thus
without the virgin birth, there would be no
sinless life.

III. His Death

His death was a fulfillment of Old Testament

Death was/is the penalty for sin

• Gen. 216-17
• 16  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying,
• Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely
  eat
• 17  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and
  evil,
• thou shalt not eat of it for in the day that
  thou eatest
• thereof thou shalt surely die.
• Romans 623
• For the wages of sin is death but the gift of
  God
• is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Due to His virgin birth, Christ lived His sinless
life, becoming the perfect sacrifice for our sin.

• 2 Corinthians 521  For he (God) hath made him
• to be sin for us, who knew no sin that we might
• be made the righteousness of God in him.

With no sin in Him, but our sin on Him, His death
and sacrifice were accepted by God.

IV. His Burial

Paul said that Christs burial was according to
the scriptures

• 1 Corinthians 154
• And that he was buried according to the
  scriptures

The burial of Christ was unique in that a pauper
was buried in a rich man's tomb

• Isaiah 539
• And he made his grave with the wicked, and with
  the rich in his death because he
• had done no violence, neither was any deceit in
  his mouth.
• Matthew 820  And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes
  have holes, and the birds of
• the air have nests but the Son of man hath not
  where to lay his head.

Christ was buried in a tomb that had never been
used.

• Luke 2353  And he took it (Christs body) down,
  and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a
  sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never
  man before was laid.
• John 1941  Now in the place where he was
  crucified there was a garden and in the garden a
  new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
• This was necessary to prove that the only person
  who could have arisen out of the tomb was
• Christ, and no one else. Hallelujah! This is one
  of the infallible proofs that Christ did do what
  the
• scriptures said he did.
• (Acts 13  To whom also he shewed himself alive
  after his passion by many infallible
• proofs, being seen of them forty days, and
  speaking of the things pertaining to the
• kingdom of God )

V. His Resurrection

Christs resurrection is the crowning point of
His mission, demonstrating the extent of His
power.

• However, without a Virgin Birth
• He would not have had a sinless life
• His sacrifice would have been tainted
• Sin would have robbed Him of His power to
  overcome death.

Christs resurrection was prophesied in the Old
Testament, and by necessity had to be fulfilled.

• Psalms 1610 (Prophecy made)
• For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell neither
  wilt thou
• suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
• Acts 227 (Fulfillment asserted)
• Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell,
  neither wilt thou

the resurrection

  down, and looked into the sepulchre, 12 And
• seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the
  head, and the other at the feet, where the body
• of Jesus had lain. 13 And they say unto her,
  Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them,
• Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know
  not where they have laid him. 14 And when
• she had thus said, she turned herself back, and
  saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was
• Jesus. 15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why
  weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She,

Now, the interdependent nature of the Gospel is
even more clear

Without the resurrection everything else we
believe is in vain, our gospel is preached in
vain, and we have no hope.

• 1 Corinthians 1514 -19 
• 14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our
  preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
• 15  Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God
  because we have testified of
• God that he raised up Christ whom he raised not
  up, if so be that the dead rise not.

  raised 17  And if Christ be not raised,
• your faith is vain ye are yet in your sins. 18
   Then they also which are fallen asleep

VI. His Second Coming

Christs second coming is a cornerstone of our
faith.

• It is a prophecy made by Jesus Himself. (Mark

• It is the catalyst for the events leading up to
  the
• Final Judgment. Rev. 2012-13

The dependencies of the second coming

• Without the second coming, Daniel, Ezekiel, and
  Isaiah are all false prophets.
• Without His sinlessness, Christ would have no
  right to judge, nor could He since He would yet
  be dead and still in the grave.
• His sinlessness, provided by the virgin birth,
  grants Him victory over sin and thus His absolute
  authority to be the Righteous Judge.

events concerning the life and ministry of Christ

• Is the accuracy Gods Word amazing to you?
• Isnt the intricacy of the way God coordinated
  the Scriptures and the life of Christ astounding?
• Do you realize that when you place your faith in
  Jesus Christ, you are placing your faith in the
  truthfulness of the Word of God, both Old and New
  Testament?

• As we said at the beginning of the message, there
  are many
• areas where good men may disagree, but upon the
  issues which
• we covered tonight, most all of us are probably
  in agreement. Granted,
• some future events (Rapture, pre-, mid, and
  post-trib events) are
• considered open to interpretation. Thus, ones
  opinions or views on those
• things do not affect ones salvation, as they are
  not directly related to the
• process of salvation (soteriology). However, the
  Judgment that comes
• after the Second Coming is an interdependent and
  foundational issue that
• relates to the basis of our faith.

• Our faith in Christ is only as strong as the
• truthfulness of the Word of God. Either all of
• what it says about Jesus Christ is true, or our
• faith is in vain. Therefore, what is our faith
