How the development of a virtual education
library informed the pedagogical approach of a
medical society.
Background
To address the needs of a specialized medical
community, the Eccles Health Sciences Library
partnered with the North American
Neuro-ophthalmology Society to build a virtual
library in Neuro-Ophthalmology and update and
standardize the Neuro-ophthalmology curriculum
outline
Methods
In the spring of 2003, the National Library of
Medicine awarded a grant to support development
of a Neuro-ophthalmology virtual library.
Transforming Neuro-ophthalmology teaching
materials from their native formats into a
virtual environment and disseminating these
materials in a meaningful way, required the
outline of a standardized pedagogy that provides
faculty with a coherent framework for using the
resource and clarify for students the
competencies required in the discipline. The
Neuro-Ophthalmology Curriculum outline provides
the framework for the digital library.
NOVEL provides an application for the curriculum
outline
- Refined curriculum outline
- Faculty found it difficult to locate a broad
spectrum of teaching materials in their
individual teaching collections - Certain subject areas were overemphasized in the
curriculum, while others were underrepresented - Helps faculty teach in areas that they do not
specialize in.
NOVEL provides faculty with the materials they
need anytime, anywhere
Developing a standardized Curriculum in
Neuro-Ophthalmology
NOVEL offers a diverse set of materials and
organizes them within the framework of a
standardized Curriculum
